idea to propagate Valley Forge elms

More than one poster who has a "Valley Forge" American elm has said that it is tought to establish a leader, since they are rooted from cuttings, that the tree still thinks it's a branch.I've heard that VF is notorious for that, and some other cultivars of other species too - the cutting thinking it's still a branch, not a tree.

I was brainstorming about this. What if someone had a VF elm that they were willing to "sacrifice" that was maybe 2-4 in caliper that they could coppice at or near ground level.

The shoots that would be sent up in response would be fiercely upright, wouldn't they? Any stump sprout I've ever seen is.

Then THESE shoots could be rooted as cuttings. Wouldn't they continue then to exhibit the upright characteristics if these shoots were rooted?

Furthermore, you could repeat the process for a few years (at least till the stump tires out) and get more trees.
