My black eyed susans are looking pretty poor

I bought a beautifully blooming black eyed susan about 7 weeks ago and approximately 2 weeks after planting it it started loosing it's petals. Then the leaves began turning brown, which I picked off so it looks a little better, just naked without the petals. I included a picture, do you think it's in shock (that happened with some of my perennials and I was patient and they came back beautifully.)? Could that be the case. Or is it actually dying? Should I wait it out and see what happens? Being new to gardening and going full throttle this year by buying at least 32 different species for my garden I need to learn everything about each different flower. I actually am keeping an excel file! Should I do anything to it to prepare it for winter if it is even still alive or will the petals return with a little patients? Thank you all very much and any and all advice/feedback it extremely welcomed and apreciated!! Sincerely, Mary Jay
