I think I made an oopsie, wrong rose?

I got an email saying my Rogue Valley order was shipping, and I was getting a band of Souvenier du Dr. Jamain (along with a band of Pretty Jessica they are holding until it's bigger.) What the heck was I thinking? I don't even remember ordering this, but it is, indeed, in my cart to be shipped.

I don't know anything about this rose except it is a really cool color and it can get 10-15 feet tall! I don't need another climber. What am I to do now? Anybody want to talk to me about hardiness, habit and bloom?

Might be something you ordered really late one night when you should have gone to bed a few hours earlier.

Karl, your insight is astounding, lol! That is most likely exactly what happened...guess I better start setting myself a curfew for online shopping. :/

I think this one sticks around so well, in large part, because it's what the pros do. A nicely amended double or triple excavated planting pit will usually give the trees and shrubs a great environment to get established in. After the roots try to move out of the backfill and into the native, can there be problems? Sure! But hey, a typical general landscape installation is guaranteed for 90 days for turf, shrubs and groundcover and 1 year for the trees. After that, everyone's been paid so you're on your own. Amended planting pit are cheap insurance for a quick establishment for architects, designers and contractors. From that point, most people think, "Well, if it's good enough for the pros, it's good enough for me". And one little correction for Dr. Chalker-Scott's piece. She states that the ideal organic content in the soil is 5% by volume. She meant to say 5% by dry weight. (Or she actually meant to say 'by volume' in which case she would be incorrect.)

Thanks for the quick response, Nancy! Actually, the bags I bought were on sale for 1.95 each, whereas the MG Potting Mix was 7.95 for a 2 cu. ft. bag *sigh* Like a dork, I thought I was buying something "better", AND saving a few bucks in the process...it figures, I made a newbie error. Probably the first of many *giggle* I'll probably hang onto them, maybe store them in the garage. One of the bags broke when I took it out of the trunk, so now all three are muddy and messy; I'm sure I'll find a use for the soil somewhere. Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated! There's one more point to be made here. When you marry, it's the couple's responsibility to blend the families, to make both feel connected to each other as one unit. The wedding is the LAST time the 2 families should be sitting on opposite sides of the aisle. By giving gifts only to your husband's family, while yours sat and watched empty-handed was like hanging a neon sign over the group that blared: "Yours" and "Mine". You cemented the line between the families. Please, next time around, think along the lines of how you can smudge it, not reinforce it. I think that's the real reason most of us who feel it was inappropriate to give gifts to some and not others feel the way we do. We're probably married longer than you, and know how challenging blending the in-laws on both sides can be under the best circumstances. Just no point in making that more difficult for everyone, even with such a little thing as this.

I agree - sometimes there is a shock affect when new paint goes up, but then as it sets, your eyes adjust. After you get the furniture in and wall hangings hung, along with any other lighting from lamps, etc., then you will be able to decide if it's what you truly like. If not, the great thing about paint is that it can be changed! I won't say it's easy to change, but it's not like a tile that has to be ripped out - paint just has to be covered up with more paint!! Hahahaha! Karl and Greenhaven! I too am such a crazy night owl, and it too would be a possible "mistake I could have likely made if I weren't so loony obsessive about roses... I'd never be able to forget any! roses I order because I'm so LOONY-obsessive! hmmm, me and my 4:00 a.m.... Well, may it be a crazy-bloomin' wonderful rose for you...

Lol, this is definitely a first for me! I bet I won't regret it, though. The only thing will be finding the perfect spot for it.

I grow Souvenier du Dr. Jamain, and it is one of my top 3 favorites. I think that the 15' thing is for southern gardeners, here in zone 5, my own root gets to be a good 5 feet high and probably 4 feet wide, maybe a bit larger, but at any rate, nowhere near 15'..but in my opinion, you should make a place for it, it is a super nice rose. It is thornless, so even if it flops out onto a walkway, it won't matter, smell is great, and I find it doesn't fade up here as much as the southern rose growers say.
Pretty Jessica is one of the Austins that I have been thinking about getting..let us know how it does in your zone...Donna

Thanks, Donna! I got paranoid after the "Free Jessica!" thread and immediately ordered a band. That was the night of the Dr Jamain fiasco, lol! I think I will ask Rogue Valley to put another PJ band on my order so I have a "spare."
