I think I bought the wrong soil! HELP!!!

I was at WalMart this morning, with every intention of picking up enough soil for my first attempt at winter sowing...but once I got there, I couldn't remember what kind of medium I was supposed to get!

So, they had plenty of variety to choose from, but my eyes zoomed in on a pallet of bags marked "organic". I thought that would be a good choice, so I grabbed three (1 cubic foot) sacks of Miracle Gro's Organic Garden Soil...however, after checking this forum again, I see most people use potting mix!

Can some of you pros tell me if it will work, or should I go back for the potting mix? Acccccccccck!

Also, one more question--approximately how many 1-gallon milk jugs will a 2-cubic foot bag of potting mix fill?

I think most of us use Miracle Grow Potting Mix. My guess is that it's cheaper than the organic stuff you got. You might want to exchange it.

I'm not sure how many jugs it might fill. I got the 64 quart size bag and I'm not sure I'll have enough left for my window boxes.

Actually, the bags I bought were on sale for 1.95 each, whereas the MG Potting Mix was 7.95 for a 2 cu. ft. bag
*sigh*

Like a dork, I thought I was buying something "better", AND saving a few bucks in the process...it figures, I made a newbie error. Probably the first of many *giggle*

I'll probably hang onto them, maybe store them in the garage. One of the bags broke when I took it out of the trunk, so now all three are muddy and messy; I'm sure I'll find a use for the soil somewhere.

I would trust what everyone here on the forum says about it, Ladyisz. I know that some of the southern folks, like MissSherry, Cat, and Floridians on the forum, probably know more about whether the PVS cats will be safe on the A. gigantea or not. I recall them saying that A. elegans (Calico pipevine) is not safe, but not sure about A. gigantea. I think Sunlight Gardens is still selling their A. macrophylla if you want to order a couple. They come in quart pots for $10 each, and their shipping is lower than a lot of mail order companies. Also, I got my two A. tomentosas from Mail Order Natives - don't know if they have any left or not. I would be checking really fast, though, because a lot of people are already out of pipevine. Susan

Glad it worked out for you. After you've had a chance to try both styles, do post back your impressions. Based on info from Vollrath's site, the 68371 "bun" pans (jelly roll style w/ four raised sides) are the same gauge aluminum as the 68085 sheets. The raised sides **shouldn't** make much difference in baking quality, even in convection mode. The CI article tested one jelly roll-style pan in the issue #74 article. It was a WearEver Commercial pan in tinned steel. The only dun seemed to be the fact that it had four raised sides -- CI felt it was easier (& resulted in more intact cookies) to remove liner sheets (parchment or silicone) when the long sides of the sheet are flat, like on the #1 rated Vollrath. Otherwise, the baking & durability ratings for the WearEver were the same as Vollrath -- three stars.

The cardboard didn't help with maintaining a moist root area, but isn't totally responsible gor what happened, either. It's very tempting to put down something like cardboard, newspapers or landscape fabric to suppress weeds, but they really do more harm then good. Weeds grow through them and root into them and become harder to deal with in the long run. It would be best to remove the cardboard, bite the proverbial bullet and pull the weeds by hand. Once the area is reasonably weed free, it's not that big a chore to keep it that way. Declined really is a better description than died. The branches showing the most extreme drooping will not revive, but the stems themselves should be fine. Cut them back to an area showing green cambium and they should put forth new growth. There is still ample time for lots of regrowth before fall. There are some root diseases which can cause this kind of rapid collapse, but I am reasonably confident that you will find very dry root balls. Should they prove to be nicely moist, you are then dealing with a more serious condition for which there is really no cure. Fingers crossed.

There's a lot going on. Stone, brick, siding, arched window, bay window, shutters. I'm compelled to simplify and edit. If the windows aren't beige and you can paint them, I'd paint it all white in an effort to simplify and edit all the elements so it's more cohesive overall. No shutters. All white means it doesn't matter if the roof is green or green-gray. Use Romabio on the brick and stone, not paint. It's not like painting brick/stone with regular paint so don't let anyone scare you off from the idea by threatening that you're taking a maintenance free element and turning it into something that will require maintenance.... maybe once every decade. If painting it all white is an option, do your own research. Romabio You need to find out how dark of a paint color you can use on the windows. Color specifications for paintable windows usually require an LRV of 55 or higher.

Garden soil tends to be much heavier and more clay-like. Take em back and get potting soil and do it right. I am sure there are ways of amending it to make it more seed-friendly, but it's not worth it if it doesn't work.

most potting mixes are soiless, it is combination of peat, perlite, vermiculite etc. It is good because it is light and fluffy and seeds have good time growing their roots without restrain of heavy soil.

Ditto the above - Garden soil is too heavy for your containers, could inhibit good root development

I'm just a bit behind you, but today I went to Wal-Mart, came home and intended to look up the product I saw at the store, but now I've forgotten the brand (it was something from Colorado, that's about all I remember). Well, that, and the 1.25 cubic foot bag conained 35 quarts. Hope that helps you some.

I am having the hardest time trying to figure out what to plant in. I'm doing some WS and some veggie starts under lights, and I'm looking for an organic option.

Lowes use to carry seed starting mix. Haven't been to Lowes in a while and looked since I mix all my own seed and potting mixes.

If you can't find anything lighter,try mixing some peat and perlite in with what you've already bought to make it lighter(peat) and better drainage(pelite).

Susan - I did the same thing! I got excited when I saw that Wal-Mart had potting soil on clearance and didn't even notice that it was garden soil instead. I got the Expert brand though. I'll still use it when I plant stuff in the ground, but now I'll have to go back and get potting soil to use for my seeds.
