st, patrick's dying buds

St Patrick's buds never fully open. They are wrinkled and deep brown at the base. When I remove the petals the core is dead and blackened. I can see no bugs.

I am trying to attach a photo.

Help anyone?

Are you in the UK? Because this problem seems to be going rampant in Nottingham!
Florist roses, garden roses, all sorts of HTs are getting this :(
To be honest, I was just about to start a topic on this!
This same thing happened to my "National Trust" HT :(

I have St. Ptrick on order grafted from S&W Greenhouse for Spring, but Palatine Roses also carries it (both excellent sellers & appear to still have it in stock). Roses Unlimited & Burlington carry it own root, but I've always been told a rule of thumb is to buy HT's grafted...some of the other posters may be able to shed some light on how St. Patrick grows ownroot though. My Pope John Paul came from J&P. I bought mine grafted, but it looks like this year they're only selling it ownroot. ~Tammy

My plant on Dr Huey has performed very well for quite a few years now. It's a superior rose in many respects. I agree with Rosetom's observation that the blooms "pancake a bit". More than a bit in my experience. My only regret is that I wish I'd not planted it where I did -- in my direct line of vision when I look out the windows over my kitchen sink. The sight of all those pancaked blooms -- like little yellow flying saucers on sticks -- can become a bit tiresome when one is confronted with them many times every day.

I've found St Pat to be a very easy rose to grow well. The symptoms you describe indicate that the plant is under heavy stress -- probably originating at the roots. I would dig deeply into the pot (near the rim) to assure myself that the soil is not waterlogged. Large, heavy pots placed on a solid surface sometimes drain very slowly, & glazed or plastic pots can exacerbate the problem. If there is a drainage issue, don't wait for the soil to dry. Remove the rose, take steps to correct the problem & replant in fresh soil. My suggestion is merely a 'shot in the dark', but given your description of the rose you purchased and it's present condition, I feel there's more going on with it than the growing pains of an immature rose bush.

Happy (belated) St. Patrick's Day! :) Since I am new to this place, I got a bit delayed in wishing you all. So, how do you generally celebrate St.Patrick's day at home? In our home,we just started celebrating it last year after my son pestered us about it. I was searching online for things to do this St.Patrick's Day and came across this list of easy and fun to do St.Patrick's Day activities. I hope someone has a answer for this because it's quite puzzling. Have you had hot dry weather, Andrea?

Yes we have had hot dry weather BUT none of my other roses, HTs or Austins, have been afflicted. I hand water the raised bed that St. Patrick is in. (It is raised but built over soil) If I had omitted watering for this plant, would this happen? I water 2 or 3 times each week. So the most this plant, if I missed it, would have gone without water is less than a week.

It could be Botrytis Blight (Botrytis cinerea), I have this problem and I am in California.

Thanks for your answer TT. I looked up Botrytis Cinerea and the sites that had info on it said that there is an accompanying grey mold. I have no mold, the buds just
shrivel and die. And the center turns black.

Botrytis normally affects the outer petals most. On flowers it produces brown rotten spots, not usually noticeable gray fuzz, I have never seen or heard of the problem you describe on a HT. Some cluster-flowering roses abort some buds for mysterious reasons. The neck tissue turns reddish and then yellow.
