I've had nothing but glowing success. This year I just expanded an existing border by lasagna method. I built it special for some special salvia seedlings I was starting.

I started with a layer of cardboard in late winter, like maybe early March, to start killing off the grass. When my husband and the neighbors starting mowing lawns in April, I started adding layers of grass clippings, yard waste, saved fall leaves, partially cooked compost, and whatever came along. I watered as I built layers, then covered with burlap for about a month. (aka interbay mulch). I kept moist. Finally, I planted my salvia seedlings.

We built several raised beds out of concrete blocks and filled them with lasagna. They are 2 blocks high, interior measurement approx 4'x9'. We purchased one 50 lb bag of alfalfa pellets, but all remaining ingredients were free. It was a huge amount of work, but the growth of my plants has been phenomenal! My bush-style crookneck squash plants are hanging off of both sides of their bed. I have a huge crop of butternut squash coming along. My cucumbers were a failure because slugs kept eating the seedlings as fast as they germinated, but everthing else looks terrific (Sorry, no photos). One warning: your plants will get so big, you will need to give them extra water. I've also gardened the way kqrna does, a thinner finished product. Back in the old days it was called sheet composting. This is also a great way to garden. We built our flower beds this way & maintain them by applying thick layers of mulch twice a year.

After making many garden beds the hard way, in our very rocky soil, I heard about Lasagna gardening and made an island bed in our side yard. I took a hose to lay out the shape of my bed, cut a trench all around the bed, used the sod pieces from the trench upside down on the bed, put thick layers of wet newspaper covering the whole bed, layered lots of leaves, grass clippings, half rotted compost, hay and goat manure, peat moss (although this is not necessary and I no longer do it), more leaves, compost, etc until it was about 18" deep. Planted right into it with perennial plants and bulbs. If most of your garden bed is unfinished, you can make pockets of finished stuff to put your plants into if you want. The plants took off, grew like crazy, and now, several years later is still going strong with the yearly addition of either more compost or organic mulch. Here's a pic....

I made my lasagnas in raised beds. They're pretty deep - probably at least twelve inches of layers. This is my third year with lasagna gardening so I have a lot of good decomposed material in the lower parts of the bed - lots of worms and castings too.

The downside to lasagna gardening is that I have too many pill bugs in the debris, and they eat my sprouts. I have slime molds occasionally, too (the layers are sort of similar to mulches, so they host slime molds.)

Both of these problems are manageable.

The other problem is that I go too high on nitrogen, easily - and this means smaller roots on root crops, and less yield on other crops. This has been less of a problem lately, as I learn to hold back on the coffee grounds (a source of nitrogen.)

It was an accident.

I had grass clippings because I was scalping the lawn. I had leaves. I piled them on the garden until I could add them to the bin.

Some animal got into the bin, so I emptied everything that wasn't solid ice onto the garden. Before I knew it, I had several very large pumpkin plants growing and they have now taken over the garden.
