Has anyone grown Mexican Sunflower from seed?
Comments (8)It is my second year growing them. They seem to be more difficult to start than other seeds. I had poor survival rates with them, but the ones that grew were impressive plants. I start in jiffy pellets and/or seed starting mix in solo cups. Not much difference in germination rates for me. Also, some type of disease got some of them. Turned brown and died once about three feet tall. I like them and have about three out in the garden right now. Last years grew very green and bushy with intense orange/red flowers. Good luck. Comments (10)I ordered one each Carmine Jewel and Crimson Passion this spring and planted them in identical conditions. The Carmine Jewel is taking off. The Crimson Passion fizzled and died. Most of the literature on these suggest that the Carmine Jewel is the mor vigorous and robust of the two, growing to about 6 1/2 feet in height and is more productive than the Crimson Passion. The Crimson Passion is supposed to be sweeter, but slightly smaller and less productive. I can vouch for it being less robust. There are several more varieties in the "Romance" series of bush cherries developed by the University of Saskatchewan, but only these two have been released for export to the US. I ordered mine from www.honeyberryusa.com which seems to be a small family run nursery business. No complaints about the service, but the guarantee only gets them to your door healthy. If they die after you plant them, you're out of luck. They are propagated from cuttings, so you'll get a twig that has been rooted, and runs about 8 to 10 inches tall. If you live in an area where deer might come, you'll need to protect them. A bar of Irish Spring soap seems to do the trick....See MoreHas anyone grown Kumatos?
Comments (10)Sumilea, I've heard that both Kumato and Campari (and I assume both are greenhouse-type hybrids grown for the grocery trade) tend to have slow-ripening, hard white cores when grown outside from F2 seeds. However, that information is from very limited sources and it might take many individual plants growing in various outdoor conditions to prove the truth. Good luck with yours....See MoreHas anyone grown Saxifraga stolonifera tricolor?
Comments (3)I had both the variegated and the so-called plainer plant, which is actually a beauty with red, glowing leaves and all these dear little baby plants growing like a curtain from the pot. I think they are very sociable plants, and when I had to put it in the tunnel over winter for lack of space, it simply died. This shouldn't have happened, because they are hardy and can survive low temperatures outside. I have a new baby one now. However, your question about the variegated one, this is really not like its stronger brother, and the variegation makes it quite a weak plant. It does not produce babies as quickly, if at all, in some cases, and just never seemed happy here. Eventually it just died; it also had a habit of getting brown edges near the white, which never happened with the non-variegated plant. You will have to really nurse it to keep it; it is, however, really beautiful if you can keep it, and I know there are some people who have great success with it. I love all these heirloom house plants, and the thought that they gave so much joy over the years to people now long gone....See Morediane_nj 6b/7a
