Has anyone grown Mexican Sunflower from seed?

I am trying to start Mexican Sunflower indoors from seed. If anyone has any tips on how to do this best, I would appreciate any help. Also, is there any chance I should start them outside in the place they will grow this early in the year? My date of last frost is May long weekend.

For germination....just press seed into the surface of the soil; light aids germination. Cover tray or whatever you are using to germinate with clear plastic until seed leaves appear and vent or remove the plastic altogether.
If you do start outdoors don't do so until after last frost date...Tithonia seedlings are VERY sensitive to frost.

I have some tithonias coming up right now and they are happy as anything. I started them indoors and now they are outside in one of those mini-greenhouses (shelving with the clear platic zippered cover.) It is not that warm out but if it is going below freezing at night I put on a blankie and set some hot rocks on the bottom shelf. It seems to be just enough to keep the cold from snuffing them.

I've just collected some Lantana seeds and was looking for info on how to germinate them. I found the following in a scientific paper from Australia. It seems to confirm the experiences of members of this and other GW forums, that germination tends to be low, but can be improved by removing the pulp from the berries and providing sufficient light and heat (as would be likely in Texas as opposed to Massachusetts or Michigan): "Lantana seeds need high light conditions for germination and early growth (Gentle and Duggin 1997b; Duggin and Gentle 1998, in Day et al. 2003), and seedlings are unlikely to survive beneath parent bushes. The germination rate of lantana is low under both laboratory and field conditions, with estimates of 4Â20% (Graaff 1987) and 44.5% (Duggin and Gentle 1998, in Day et al. 2003). Germination rates increased from ten per cent to 46 per cent when the fleshy pulp was manually removed from the seed. This higher germination rate is comparable to that obtained from seeds collected from the faeces of wild birds. Seeds germinate at any time of the year given sufficient soil moisture, with most seed germinating after the first summer storms in northern Australia (Parsons and Cuthbertson 2001, in Day et al. 2003). Hello Angelsmell, I'm reading all these posts with great interest. Cananga is a native here in northern Australia but I can't seem to find var. fruticosa anywhere but I'm not going to stop trying;). Perhaps I can shed some light from my experience. I tried for ages with seed from exchanges, clubs, trades etc. I was never able to get them to germinate. Tried scarifying, acid treatment, giberrelic acid, even tried feeding some to the chooks (sorry, chickens) to see if they would germinate in the droppings. No good. Finally got on to the bloke who is the head of the seed collection dept. for Queensland parks and wildlife. Turns out that seed is only viable for a very short time. I got some from him and planted it all into a large foam box, put it into my shadehouse and had seedlings on the warmer side of the box in three days. They grew very quickly but being an unnatractive seedling I had a hard time giving them away. Now that they are flowering everyone wants one!! I had no idea how long they would take to flower but was very pleasantly surprised to see flowers early in the second year from seed!! They are now three years old, nearly 20 feet tall and almost constantly covered in flowers. I will harvest my first seed from them this week. We had a cyclone (hurricane) through here about a year ago, it was preceded by three or four weeks of torrential rain which softened the ground around the tree's roots. The canangas were leaning over until they touched the ground in the wind. One was over the washing line so I tied it up using two strong ropes. This tree now grows extremely crooked while the ones I didn't tie up in the cyclone are straight as arrows. I keep meaning to cut the top 10 or 12 feet off it so it will grow straight again but I can't catch it out of flower for long enough. My wife and my neighbours would ban me from the chainsaw if I cut it while it was covered in flowers. I hope this helps a bit, we are pretty troical here and I don't know what your climate is like. Mint? Go to the grocery store, buy a bunch of mint for a dollar or two. (Make sure it looks alive! Not wilted but vigorous.) take a 4" deep tray, fill with moist playsand (DO NOT MAKE MUD!...roots need oxygen). Pop pencil holes in the sand, drop in diagonally cut stems and cover with a humidity dome or a sealed clear plastic bag. Use sunlight or daylight artificials. No rooting hormone required. In 2-3 weeks you'll have more mint to transplant than you'll ever need. If you want the roots to get big...leave plants in the sand, remove dome and water with with a super diluted nutrient supplement like Masterblend or MiracleGro This technique will work with almost all fresh cut (perennia) herbs.

Has anyone grown from hybrid seeds?

I have grown hybrid tomatoes from saved seed. They always reverted back to one of the parent varieties. The tomatoes were perfectly edible but were no longer the variety I saved from. If one does this, the tomatoes produced might be perfectly fine and look and even taste the same, but the plants might have lost the disease resistance that was bred into the plants, which may have been the reason for hybridizing in the first place. I have had luck with a hybrid dwarfed container tomato. The seed has not been available lately that I can find and it is still pretty much the same plant as the original (and still as bland and mediocre flavored) after four seasons (generations). I expect it to fail sooner or later. The only reason I still grow it is that my sisters and some friends like it and want it, and the plants produce my earliest tomatoes every year. Give it a try. Have fun but do not rely on them for your crop. You only have one shot at success every year so do not take the risk of a failed crop due to experimentation. -Tom

I've been having a tough time with them this year (my first year growing them.) They germinate, get to be about two inches tall and die. It's not damping off, but I have been having trouble with aphids. The second time I planted them I was watching out for the aphids. Still no luck.

It is my second year growing them. They seem to be more difficult to start than other seeds. I had poor survival rates with them, but the ones that grew were impressive plants. I start in jiffy pellets and/or seed starting mix in solo cups. Not much difference in germination rates for me.

Also, some type of disease got some of them. Turned brown and died once about three feet tall. I like them and have about three out in the garden right now. Last years grew very green and bushy with intense orange/red flowers.

I started mine indoors as well. The ones in peat pots died. The ones in the peat pellets (first time I ever tried them) seem to be doing well. Goldfinger was much more difficult than Torch. I had about 90% germination but expect to have many die off as they get bigger. This is my first year to try them as well.
Just for fun, I am going to throw a few seeds outdoors this weekend to see what happens (if anything)Good luck!

Plant them outside in the ground only after the ground has warmed.

I find a plastic cup (styrofoam coffee cup, or a yogurt cup, with slits at the bottom in four places) filled with potting soil preferable to peat pellets for starting inside. The netting that holds a peat pellet is a problem for roots.

Barely cover the seeds, water well, then wait and watch.
