Mrs. B.R. Cant is alive

I really gave up on my two 8 foot square roses. After the first bloom over a month ago, I began cutting out the wood that looked bad. I got down to a couple of canes two feet from the ground and no side shoots.

I have been watering them, but thought it might be possible for them to come back since they are bare roots.

Now I see little sprouts, and have become optimistic.

They are in full sun with no leaves, and only a couple of sprouts each. I wonder if I should attempt to cover them in some way to protect them from the sun. It was 97 degrees earlier today with a heat index of way over 100.

I am afraid the sun will burn them.

What do you do in such a heat if your plant has no leaves?

Thanks,

Sammy
