So sad to see such an old, respected name in roses brought to this level.
Of course, J&P NOW is a completely different company from J&P of the past.
Only the name remains un-changed.

I'd be surprised if J&P survives five years from now.
They've been sold before but the current ownership group includes Wayside/Michigan Bulb and other nefarious lables.
In my opinion the new parent company sucks and I've not bought from them for years.
Some have had good luck with Wayside, etc. but not me.
If you paid with a CC I'd ask the company to reverse the charges.
Most will within six months and help you with a dispute.
Sorry to hear that, but not surprised.

I feared this would happen with the sale of the company and so ordered really early this season, before the changeover.

So sorry to hear of your problems. Having done some corporate mergers, I am sad but not surprised.

My OLOG rose trees were ok, but others were not. And although they acknowledged my email asking for replacements, I haven't seen anything from them (except emails to buy more roses).

I too am sad. Most of my roses are from J&P and I've often recommended them here. But after last year I swore I'd never get roses from Wayside and now it's also J&P.

I do think that this was a rough year. I also got DA roses from Tyler Texas and while they looked good on arrival, I've already lost one. So who knows. We'll see what happens next year.

Normally, I am the first to give a nursery a little slack.
But this J&P thing bugs me, because the problems are SO bad,
Also, because they are trading on the long-established J&P reputation for customer service
(and good plants!).

So I really wish y'all who've gotten "stung" would follow this up.
Go to your credit card company.
Document everything.
And tell EVERYONE what has happened.
They really shouldn't be let to get away with this.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with J&P. At this point all you can do is call your credit card co. and have them take the charge off for the full amount. The charge comes off immediately until it's settled, like mentioned above document every conversation, name and date.
If J&P doesn't reverse this trend quickly they'll start to be known as Junk in Pots. Would be a shame to see this company go down the drain. Oh well, the sun will stop shining some day too ;-)

A year or two ago I got my first J&P catalog since I was a teenager (back in the mid-1970's), and I knew then to worry.

The catalog was so different as to be almost unrecognizable. Back in the day the catalog was 100% roses for sale.

Only roses.

Not now..............

It's a shame. End of an era

I too was bitten by the new and not improved J&P. Many years ago I ordered roses from them and had one molded cane. They sent a bush to replace it.

This year. thankfully, I ordered only two. Both had canker, in fact there was only one decent cane on the bush that wasn't cankered.

By the time I received the order, I had read about the trouble many of you had had, so I knew I was up the creek. The bushes are both growinf, but I consider I'll be lucky if they are not just root stock.

Add my name to the list. Bad help, no roses, web site that doesn't work --and they are owned by the trash that has Michigan Bulb. No way will I ever trust them again!

How do you keep up with who owns who and when ownership changes hands, especially well known old names like J&P? I have the catalogs back to the "60's. Gardeneers new to roses might give roses a return to "the bad seed" thinking they bought quality so it must be all roses are bad. Personally, I would appreciate a thread for who's who. Example, one of my favorites, Heronwood was bought by Burpee. Is this still true, or have they changed hands again. Which "name brand's" continue under different ownership. Who's quality improves and who's fails after an ownership change. Who owns Wayside and grows the plants they sell?

Actually, J&P has changed hands several times since the '60's, being absorbed by one
international megacorp after another.
But through all of those changes, they continued to operate as J&P, with some eye to quality,
and certainly to development.

Now, however, the whole structure is gone.
The entity (connected with "Wayward" Gardens, I think) that bought the name and the cultivars,
did not buy the land in Wasco.
That land was sold separately, and will doubtless be developed at some point.
There's a lot of development going on out there.

I should point out that WEEKS roses is still Weeks Roses.
Their operation is still in place, and while they are moving to own-root, their quality still stands.
Of course, they do not sell directly.

I hope those who have negative experiences with the so-called J&P report those experiences to the
various "garden watchdog" pages.

Here's my two cent experience with J&P this year. I called with a question about a particular rose. After getting a customer service rep who merely read to me out of their catalog information that I could and had already read, I asked if she worked for J&P specifically. She said that she worked for the xyz company (can't remember the name) and that they were strictly hired to answer the phones and had no relationship to J&P itself. I asked her if she gardened and she said that between work and kids she didn't have time. So remember that when you go off on a service rep. She has no control over the quality of the product and outside of perhaps filling out a form has no input into the decision making process of J&P and it's affiliates. Perhaps that may change after J&P gets sorted out, however I doubt it. With wages, benefits and profits being what they are we may end up talking to someone in India one day.

I've been waiting to see the production of rose plants move overseas.
South America, China, even Africa.
Just as production of clothing and other goods has been drifting off to China. Et al.
But this morning, I read that there are impending problems with the now ubiquitous Chinese imports.
As the cost of oil climbs, it's becoming too expensive to ship the stuff from China to the U.S.
How ironic.
Maybe rose production will stay in the U.S., after all.
If we're not all broke anyhow, maybe we'll be able to purchase roses grown where we live.

My last order was goofed up too. Suposed to be Heaven on Earth. It is not. Just two small canes poking along weakly and the other canes died away of rot. I'm not even going to bother them for a replacement. Does anyone else sell Heaven on Earth?
The last rose I got from Wayside was full of Mosaic Virus. I'm with all of you- not worth the aggravation to buy a rose from these suppliers.

I have not ordered from J/P for a few years (change of career, new job, etc)...but placed an order this winter for a couple roses.

April in Paris. It came with two viable (to be generous) canes. It has put out 3 roses, all puny, and its going to be yanked as soon as I decide what to put in its pot. '

I will not be ordering from J/P again -- I didn't know they were owned by Michigan Bulb and Light Supply -- very piss poor quality.

I however did purchase a cool brand new rose today -- Grandma's Rose - the new official yellow rose of Texas.

J&P IS NOT owned by Michigan Bulb, nor vice versa.

A friend here had two different shipments of J&P roses purchased for her as gifts. Had the friends not asked her about them she probably would have never gotten them. She called to inquire on the first gift order and was told that nothing is available on the computer and that they couldn't tell her anything, if/when or ever her plants would ship. Both gift orders did eventually arrive, with the exact same apology letters for their lateness and an extra rose tossed in for her trouble. At first she was happy to get an extra rose, but with the second shipment getting the exact same treatment she wasn't too happy. I don't know what shape the bare roots were in, but it seems a little late to be shipping bareroots. I can't imagine what person picked the middle of spring shipping to change hands on a nursery business. That decision was obviously called by someone who knows nothing about the nursery business. I hope they can survive and turn things around. For a positive, we received decent wholesale plant material as scheduled last fall, but will not risk it in the foreseeable future.
