Legacy of J&P

I just received the new American Rose Rambler. Front page is a most interesting article by Mr. Peter Schneider about the demise of Jackson & Perkins.

Among other fascinaing observations: Bill Warriner used to privately complain "good naturedly" about the "brown and green and shrub roses" he wasn't allowed to introduce.

I would be interested to hear forum members opinions on the question posed by Mr. Schneider towards the end of his article, as to whether the rose industry "went around in a circle"? After a, what, 50-60 years of mostly HTs and florabundas, are the newest any better than those being introduced by J.H. Nichols in the 1930s? I am wondering if after the American rose industry moved en masse to CA and TX, they forgot about growing conditions in colder, less favorable parts of the country.

I am not even sure that the newest are much hardier than many of the early 20thC selections. The Pernetanias are not hardy, but the Radiance tribe can apparently be grown to zone 4.
