Received bare root roses from J&P. Now what?

I bought 2 roses: a knockout and a double knockout. I am in Boston, MA, zone 6. It is still somewhat warm here (day temp around or over 70es). Is it too hot for planting right now? how long should I soak them? Should I soak them inside, or outside in the sun? any other tips for planting them out?

I am a newbie hence the silly questions. Thanks a lot!

I am suprised they send them NOW. Usually, they send bare roots in SPRING.

you should call them and ask why they shipped bare root in fall. The earlier they should ship to very warm CA (zone 9-11) is December.

If you decide to plan them, you have to soak them from 6 hrs to 24 hours.

you know what? they are potted, not bareroot. DH called me at work and said the roses have arrived, but he just assumed they were bareroot as he didn't open the package. :)

So any precautions for planting out potted roses?

miriam, I got Pope John Paul II and Sweetness own root from J&P this winter, because I wanted both roses to grow on their own roots and couldn't find them anywhere else. I believe Sweetness is carried by J&P exclusive anyway and since I am such a sucker of lavender colored roses, so I had to try it! The roses arrived in a decent size, but some of the canes where damaged and also some of the roots where broken and even split, I guess because of poor handling. I cut the roots back to a healthy part and also the canes, that were damaged. Then I potted both roses up in containers. The roses were having some cane die back, but it stopped after I had cut the canes back to a healthy part, again. I have to say they by now they do reasonably well. Still I would not order from J&P again, if I have a chance to get the same rose from another vendor own root, because I felt they didn't treat their roses very well and I don't want to support that. It's quite a pitty, because J&P were carrying really nice roses in the past and some of them exclusively. Their quality standards seemed to have come down after the company was sold. Their was also a long thread about that issue here on GW. I have heard, that they will deliver own root roses to the nurseries from next year one. I may consider to buy their own root roses directly from a local nursery, though. This way you can at least check out the canes, the strength of the plant and if the roots are badly damaged you can return it easily to the nursery and get a substitute.

I'm just beginning, but when I was looking for an Ebb Tide Rose, I ran into Jung Nurseries... I don't know anything about them and can't tell you much about their stock but they have a sale going on and a bunch of the roses are $10... Plus they're still shipping. Keep in mind I haven't received my order yet, and I've heard good and bad about them, but the ones I ordered are 2 year plants, which beats the plugs some places are selling. Good luck and let me know how it goes or you find any other really good sales going on (and they're still shipping). :)

If you ever do a lavender rose bed like I did, I would be happy to tell you which failed, which thrived and which has the best fragrance. I have been working on this lavender bed 4 years now. The opposite side of the arch is all peaches and apricots. This year my big project is a new hot room - all yellows, reds, bright oranges - a mix of roses and perennials. Purple petunias line the fronts. I am terrible at design though so I wind up moving plants around for years until I get it right. That hot room also has 15 Cannas, elephant ears and bananas in huge pots. Yes, I know. We had 90 mile an hour winds yesterday, snow today and hail a week ago. Of course it has been high 60's for several months before that. What the heck???

The more I think about Cream Veranda, the more details come to me. This is a rose that must be deadheaded. It holds on to the ugly dry wads that look like used Kleenex. It has short stems, so not so great for cutting. It’s blooms are pinker and smaller in the heat and hot bright sun. They are more peach and petal packed in the cooler times of year. The apricot photos above where taken on November 10,2016. The smaller pinker ones come, (for me) between June and October. Cream Veranda isn’t a rose that covers itself with blooms for me, but has between two and 8 per small plant almost all the time. It’s not super happy happy when it’s over 90F with humidity of less than 30%, but no rose really is. Plus, my CV’s are in relatively small containers. They are fine if I remember to take them down during heatwaves that last for more than a couple of days. Remember though, I’m in San Diego Co, CA. I’m pretty much in a desert climate, although I (thankfully) get some coastal cooling. I like that they stay small and happy in their containers. I have seen some pictures from someone on here of really BIG Cream Veranda’s. I think she was in the Pacific NW. They were enormous! If it sounds like I’m “dissing” Cream Veranda, that’s not my intention. I enjoy mine, and they suit my needs. I wanted a pair of small roses for the front of the house in hanging containers. They might behave completely differently in the ground, or in a climate that isn’t as hot and dry as mine. My experience with my CV’s are pretty blooms, small plants, healthy plants, and reliable (but not big flush) bloomers. There’s not a single bloom on either of mine right now, as I recently deadheaded them and it’s been too hot. If it cools off today, I’ll hang them back up and snap a photo for you. Lisa

I guess you need to dig hole twice as wide and same depth as your pot. You may want to dig deeper and back fill it with compost. Water it well!

You should be fine planting these now but I wouldn't put it off much longer. Follow the digging advice above and mulch well.

Water them well now. Dig your holes so they will accomodate the pots, yet so that the soil lines are even, pot vs. outside soils. Wet the hole well. With a sharp knife, remove the bottom of the pot, set rose in the hole, and slit up the sides of the pot and remove. Back fill with soil and water. Keep them moist for a few days until they settle in. After your first frost, winterize, and hope for the best. Getting roses now is rather unusual. It is best, when ordering to specify you want them sent in the spring, like March, but not now.

This is the first time J&P has offered fall shipping of potted roses. It was well publicized.

Zone 6a is a little iffy for planting roses in the fall, even potted. It won't be long before it gets very cold, the roses stop growing, and not enough roots are established before the ground freezes.

I would get them in the ground ASAP, water well if no rain, and mulch them beginning of Dec. for protection.

I've planted dormant bare roots in the fall but all attempts to successfully plant warm climate grown potted plants in the fall in my area have failed due to their failure to aclimate to my cold winter climate.
Because of this I recommend waiting until spring to purchase potted roses for planting in a colder growing zone.
You can follow Veilchen's suggestions and hope for a long, warm fall.
