Cecil Brunner? New Dawn? Something else?

I have an ancient Climbing Cecil Brunner that is trained horizontally. It's sitting on one end of a low support about 30 feet long.

It gets thin toward the opposite end and I'd would like to plant another climber to even out.

What should I plant? I'm pretty tired of CB but another CB will be most symmetrical.

Or should I go with New Dawn (will it mildew?) Something else? I love bi-color, ruffles, singles, apricot, orange, lavender roses but whatever I pick needs to fit well with CB. I already have a lot of pinks and yearn for other colors but it may look odd with CB on one end. Maybe stick with small flower, pastel roses?

It also needs to bloom a ton since these roses are the center piece of the front yard.

I don't plan on spraying so disease resistance and low maintenance is important, but scent is not.

I already have Cl. Icebergs, Eden, Sally Holmes.

I live in So Cal coastal area.

New Dawn while a fantastic rose in a colder zone, is an under-performer in So Cal. It likes winter chill.

What about:
'Renae'--very rust and mildew resistant, lovely fragrant pink flowers, almost no thorns at all.

'Crepuscule'--superb disease resistance, fragrant, almost no thorns at all.

'Secret Garden Musk Climber'--much like 'Sally Holmes' but with much better rebloom, superb disease resistance, fragrant, happy along the coast.

Or one of the climbing Tea roses such as 'Cl. Lady Hillingdon'

Something more modern? 'Fourth of July', 'Berries n Cream'.

Climbing Mlle Cecile Brunner (despite claims to the contrary) has usually been a once bloomer (heavy in spring with minimal repeat later). However, there are several sports of this rose both in size and color; Spray Cecile Brunner, (up to nine foot and beyond in my garden) tends to be a repeat bloomer here in Southern California; EVerblooming Cecile Brunner (from Siskyou Rare Plants) via Heirloom is supposed to be a continuous or at least remontant bloomer. There is a another bush variety with little or no yellow in the center of the bloom that grows to six by six feet. There are a couple of white versions and there was in the late '20's a yellow sport of Cl. Cecile Brunner. The rose is rapidly becoming the landscaper's alternative to 'Iceberg' in southern California because of its floriferoussness and thornfree and disease-free characteristics. As an aside, the larger the plant, the more thorns: thus the bush form is virtually thornless, but the climbers and other sports carry thorns even as they grow. Mlle Cecile Brunner is arguably the second most popular polyantha in the world; and if you include all of the altnertaive sports, it may be the most popular. JD

How many stories tall is your house? Is this rose a Climbing Cecile Brunner, or the bush form? See pic - we have a climbing Cecile Brunner on our 3 1/2 story house - it grew up to the roof, fell of in a Winter storm and was cut way down, grew up to the roof again, was cut down to 7 feet because of painting, and immediately grew up to the roof again. So, I know exactly what you are talking about. My DH gets up on a ladder each Fall and ties up (or cuts, depending) the long long laterals which are either leaning out or fountaining down. He clears the 4 windows involved, and ties canes all around our bedroom window, so that the view from inside is a window framed with roses. My point is, if your house is only one story, and it is Cl Cecile Brunner, the rose might be too big for the house. If it is the bush form just growing a bit tall, you certainly can just tie it up using eye bolts & ties as you suggest. Ours gets so heavy that my DH got some metal square plates with large metal rings coming out of them (which are used for tying up horses), and screwed them to the house. Whatever you decide to do, this rose is very flexible regarding pruning, and I don't think you can hurt it - as I said, ours always rebounds amazingly. Jackie

Love this thread but not sure how to navigate through here I pray someone reads my post. I really need some Advise… I had a climbing Cecil Bruner for over 15 years until we had to replace our fence, (no, the Cecil did not affect it) the fence was just old! It Was a huge climber trained to arch across the fence. I hated to have to Pull It out. The fragrance was lovely but yea it definately gets Huge if you don’t keep it trimmed. A year later. We put up wrought iron fencing along the front of our home (we live on a corner) I decided since I love the Cecil so Much That we would have it planted along the fencing ( and did) it’s unbelievably beautiful) I’ll try to post pics if I can. This is the problem, (a couple of them actually) I didn’t realize this was a one time bloomer, although the one we had in the backyard YARD bloomed several times, so we’ll see with this one) With that said, I’m rethinking whether to remove it which would be a huge job! OR, research another rose to intertwine with the Cecil (if that’s possible? I’m older and live alone so a lot of this work I do on my own so a little skeptical. I actually did some gardening this weekend noticing that I had another climber that I had actually put in at the same times as the Cecil (darn!) it was the lady banks rose and I swear the bloom came and went so fast I had totally forgotten about it. So I started trying to remove it and prayed that I was cutting the right branches!! I’m freaking out right now. I really don’t Want to lose the Cecil if I can help it… and wondering if I can actually plant a new rose climber that Might work and if not thornless, at least very little thorns. Any suggestions would sure be appreciated. I have a love/hate relationship with my 2 Mme Bs, but yours is lovely. I have just moved 1 into a slightly more shaded position to see if I get better summer blooms. Your 'Showery' CB is gorgeous. I mentioned on another thread I had to hack mine back about 4 weeks ago and she has shot up from 2' to 5'+ and has candelabras of buds just getting ready to open. At least the sun won't fry HER. crossposted. Love the lily and the ladies... I think something (snails) ate my lankon but the orange tiger lilies and Christmas lilies seem to have survived and should flower in another 2-3 weeks

New Dawn has very stiff canes and does better growing UP and over rather than straight across...

Not 'New Dawn.'
It's a great rose, but will probably be mildewy near the SoCal coast.

I agree that Renae might be the perfect choice.

Well, I'm excited to hear Renae getting rave reviews, as I've been trying to decide between Renae, Polka, Eden, Rosarium Uetersen, Margo Koster, Phyllis Bide, Cecile Brunner, and a bunch of others. Took Penny Lane off the list as it appears to be related to New Dawn. The nonexistent winter chill affects which fruit trees we cannot grow here, but I had never thought about it with roses, so thank you for this post.

Thank you for all the input! I will check out Renae and see if I can get it.

Also - a friend recommended Cornelia (Hybrid Musk). I had one long ago and subtle variation of warm pink/coral sure was pretty - can't remember why I pulled it out.

What do you think of Cornelia?

I need a super low maintenance, prolific bloomer - since I am low on time AND space.

Thank you, Jeri and Hoovb! I emailed Burlington for the availability list and Renae is available, so I am all set. I will order her tomorrow... after I decide what else on the list I just have to have!
