Black Gum tree

I recently saw some Black Gum trees and would love to put one near the back of our 1/2 acre property (sort of a centerpiece). The problem is that I can't find a decent-sized one to purchase (I'd like something balled, 9-15 ft. tall). I can wait till Fall, but need help locating a supplier.

I would be willing to go to Illinois (Chicago suburbs), anywhere in N.W. Indiana, or even S.W. Michigan (perferably not too far over the border).

Can anyone help?

Fall is a good time to select a fall color tree anyway, you can look for one that is coloring well.

Nyssa sylvatica (Black Gum) is a hardwood tree and is best chosen in early fall, when one can choose the best color change potential out of the available Black Gums for purchase.

These trees mostly are grown from seed and vary greatly in their fall leaf color change potentials.

Also, even if you want a large tree, do not purchase a bare root one. this tree does not tranplant very well if dug out of the ground not too long before it is to be sold and planted. It is best to select your tree from a range of 7 - 15 gallon sized, potted Black Gum trees. Just be certain to check the rootflare to make certain that non of those roots are circling the trunk. Before purchasing, you may need to push some of the potting soil away around the base of the trunk, inorder to see the root flair well enough to determine if the root flair is growing properly and not showing a tendency to circle the rootball or trunk of the tree.

Also just prior to planting, make two crossing, through each other, slices at the bottom of the rootball; That is if you see a solid mass of tangled roots there. Then along the sides, if you see roots crowded and entangled along or circling throughout the side portions of the rootball, simply make 4 slices cut from the top to bottom along the sides of the rootball, keeping all 4 cuts evenly spaced around the rootball, but not in line with the bottom of the rootball slices.

Thanks for confirming the fall color, that was one of the reasons I was looking at the black gum. Our yard is narrow and deep, the city block we live on is quite large though and very open in the center so I don't think the tree size will be a problem. It will be planted along the back lot line. I am going to have to check on the soil conditions. I live on the south end of Oshkosh so the zone should be fine. Thanks everyone for the info. This was the first time I've used a forum and it was very helpful. Rachel, I haven't seen any in the nurseries around here. I was wondering who the landscaper was. I might call him to find out if he knows of any place to purchase the tree near Oshkosh

I can't really remember whether it flowered in the spring.If it did, the flowers weren't very conspicuous. I'll wait and see if it flowers next spring and will try to get a female if the tree that I have turns out to be all-male. I really wanted this tree for the berries and the birds that its berries attract.

Hi Minibim: Maybe you're right; I've read that black gums don't transplant well, so I've been reluctant to unearth it. But maybe if I dig around it enough to see what the rootball looks like that'll give me an idea of whether or not to proceed. Thanks again for your help.
