It's possible the cold winter had an effect, or that the tree is still under transplant stress, but it's also possible you have a male tree - I think blackgums are usually dioecious (male and female flowers on separate trees).

Did the tree actually flower this year?

Silvics Manual says black gum is polygamo-dioecious, which means mostly (or sometimes all) of one sex with a few perfect (male and female) flowers or flowers of the other sex.

Might not ever have fruit if it's all-male.

a.) I didn't think they were self pollinating, beng's right.
b.) Transplanting is VERY traumatic for a large tree...it often loses most of it's roots. Some trees skip fruiting in years when they don't feel well.

I can't really remember whether it flowered in the spring.If it did, the flowers weren't very conspicuous. I'll wait and see if it flowers next spring and will try to get a female if the tree that I have turns out to be all-male. I really wanted this tree for the berries and the birds that its berries attract.
