Nyssa sylvatica 'Wildfire' ID questions
Comments (8)Because they are the ONLY local nursery unfortunately. The only one with any sizable selection of trees anyways. They are also unwilling to put forth any effort to find BnB trees for me. For the last year, I have given nearly all of my tree buying purchases to two businesses in northwest AR which are very accomidating, about 1.5 hours away. Every now and then the local nursery gets something cool that warrants a purchase. This is the first possibly mistaken ID tree I have bought from them which would not have happened if I waited until it was leafed out. But then it would have lost valuable time putting roots down before summer. As I said, I don't necessarily want to give it back because they are so hard to grow. And I am cautiously optimistic about dieback not occurring next spring. I am planning a visit to the nursery sometime on a lunch break this week to check their remaining stock of 'Wildfire' and their coloration. John...See MoreNyssa sylvatica leaf out and suckers
Comments (8)I think nyssa just does this the year after transplant. I waited mine out then had to prune off the dead. My bet is yours does fine next winter. Here is a link where I was worried or asking about mine. It survived my -10F winter this year with flying colors. The first year in the ground it did not do so well. Curious, mine is a fu fu grafted cultivar. Is yours a main species tree? Comments (7)Hair, Just stick 'em in the fridge and plant them whenever you want next spring. Several years ago, someone sent me a big bag of 'Chinese fringetree' seeds. Planted them, and seemed to have gotten 110% germination...but something just never looked right about leaf morphology for them to be C. retusus...looked vaguely familiar, but I just couldn't put my finger on what it was... until they put on their fabulous fall color display, then the lightbulb went on in my head... they were Nyssa sylvatica......See MoreFALL COLOR THREAD - 2019
Comments (58)Sugar maples in old fields that didn't get fertilized all year always color better than those that were pampered. (Also fixed my post from further back.) I always see the best color when I am driving somewhere and there's no time or spot to pull over and take a pic....See MoreSara Malone (Zone 9b)
