Rank spring-flowering trees by the length of the blooms

The longest blooms seem to be the red buds, although the flowers are of different shape.

The blooms of the late-double cherry and peach trees also last a long time.

....

On the other end, service berry only blooms for 3 days.

My cornus florida dogwoods seem like winners every spring and fall. This year was not great for them but it was TERRIBLE for all the local redbuds.

My Serviceberry did pretty good this year. Maybe a week? I have to attach a pic of the tag to get the name right.

My cornus controversa is flowering now. I will time it but don't think it is extremely long

A seldom mentioned mid-spring bloomer for Zones 5-8 is Styrax japonica which also has some named varieties. A medium grower to about 20-25 feet. Very fragrant in bloom. Nice tree for the home landscape.

If it has a strong vanilla-type scent and is growing in a moist area, check out swamp azalea, Rhododendron viscosum which occurs in white most commonly, but also in pink.

knuttle...Some interesting reading if you do a search for...who introduced Prunus mume. Will give you answers re when it was introduced into this country. Root using softwood cuttings and rooting hormone. I have not tried rooting it in water but certainly an easy experiment to undertake. Must admit that I am a lazy propagator and mostly use the method I have posted a few times. Do a search on the Propagation Forum for "Toothpick Technique".

Witch hazel does, literally, bloom for 2 months; mid-February, all of March, and into April. At least, Arnold Promise does, on the cape. Mine is a teenager, and is about ... 12' tall. Not sure how tall he'll get. Love the halesia suggestion - I don;t have one but they certainly do look nice. My cornus mas is an incredibly slow grower, it's got to be 10 years old and is no taller than me. A nearby (volunteer, no less) crab apple outshines it every year, I'm sorry to say. Maybe it's just that it's unhappy on the southeast corner of my house, but I'm underwhelmed by the flowers and overall appearance of this plant. Bummer, because it was on my list of "can't live without" plants for a long time. If I was going to plant something there now, I think I'd go with Prunus mume.

I second esh_ga's suggestion of _Cornus florida_. Another good native, understory spring-flowering tree is the redbud (_Cercis canadensis_). The typical color of the redbud is mauve, but it also comes in a beautiful white version (_Cercis canadensis alba_).

It is well known, I think. I never had one though. There are similar trees called Jack tree and Silver bells, etc.

I find Cydonia also blooms for a very long time into summer. The flowers open over a period of time, and the flowers are very large. Perhaps, someone will develop a long blooming cultivar.
