Any scientific data to back deadheading?

I'm getting suspicious as to the benefits of deadheading. My neighbor has most of the same plants I do - Butterfly bushes, daylilies, rhododendrons, roses, shasta daisies, crepe myrtles, etc. She never deadheads (or prunes), and I do. I don't see any difference in the amount of bloom.

Of course, I realize deadheaded/pruned plants are far more attractive - but it is supposed to increase the bloom as well. I just don't see it!! Has this been scientifically proven, or is it a pet theory (like taking hormone replacement therapy is good for your heart) that turns out false if actual stats were kept?

To add insult to injury, my properly pruned plants get attacked with borers, while her unpruned shrubs are just hunky-dory!!!
