help me pick some roses please

Ok..here is my story, my wife and I built a new house..arts and crafts style, with a big back patio (antique pavers) and a back yard one side shade the other full sun. I would like to plant a cottage style garden with some roses in the full sun areas. I have already posted about cllimbing roses and have been recommended Quadra for my arbor, and William Baffin for the back end of yard. My question is..there are some other varieties available to me at wholesale prices thru a local nursery andc would like to get opinions on these. The places I am considering planting additional roses, are under my windows in my three season porch..so I would be looking for maybe 3 to form a hedge. I would also like a few for large pots, and finally I will have a small retaining wall/planter that will border the patio built in flagstone which will be approximately 12" high by 12" wide. The roses which are available are: Lady elsie may, carefree delight, carefree sunshine, rainbow knockout, double knockout, radrazz knockout, blushing knockout, pink knockout, nearly wild rose, red meidiland , and white meidiland. In addition can anyone recommend where to purchase the William Baffin and Quadra. Thanks in advance

Well, I tend to like vibrant colors more than I like pastels, so I would personally pick either Double Knockout or Radrazz Knockout, but it depends on what colors you like best. Is there any way you can post a picture of your house and that might help us decide which color would look best. The pictures of Rainbow Knockout make it look more vibrant than it is. The ones I've seen at the nursery look kind of washed out. I really don't think you could go wrong with any of the ones you mentioned as long as they do okay in your zone.

Those are all pretty good choices, so just go with what you like. If you need more info about sizes, etc., check them out at helpmefind.com. Do you know that resource? Great help in making choices, but it can be rather conservative about listing hardiness zones. Notice there is a photo tab also--often lots of pics there.

aggierose, it's my favorite garden center in all of North Texas. Here are directions: They are between Forest Lane and Royal Lane and between Hillcrest and Central Expressway at 7700 Northaven Rd. Dallas, Texas 75230. It's in the middle of a nice residential area on Northaven Road. Depending upon where you are coming from: Â· From Central Expressway South bound, exit at Churchill/Forest Lane and continue south 1.3 miles on the access road to Northaven Rd. Go right on Northaven for 2 blocks. The store is on your left. Â· From Central Expressway North bound, exit at Forest Lane loop around to the south bound service road for .3 miles. what color do you want for her, Aprille? I second Perle d'Or also; it is a great rose! You might try looking at the Chamblees rose site at the Earthkind roses they have for sale. They are in Tyler, east of Dallas. Other ones I grow here in north Alabama that are Earthkind that I really like are Ducher and Spice. I love both these roses and think they'd be good in McKinney also. I understand there is a demonstration garden up north of Mckinney now; I wish she could go and see what they have, but don't know about the hours, etc. Good luck, Aprille! Hi lizalily :) You know, I LOVE apricot/peach roses, but wasn't so sure that these would look good or not. They remind me of my mom, in the sense that apricots were her favorite fruit lol. It's something else to consider for sure. I was going to add in some lime colors with the perennials for sure - hostas will be added and I'm going to be very careful about the leaf colors I choose. I think I have to lay off anymore hydrangeas at this point; I already have 6 of them, plus the tree and any more empty space needs to be for the roses and lower growing cutting flowers (I might be able to squeeze on more in somewhere, but would prefer not to).

I highly second the "get one of each and see how they both feel and look in person" suggestions. The ones I loved the look of felt horrible and didn't look right held up against the cabinets at all. One of the other ones I liked alot felt great and looked great with the cabinets. It is somewhat of a combination between your tapered and your square edge...but with a fuller "foot". Check out the Atlas A826 if you want to see what we have selected. I think I have purchased about 7 different pulls to find the right one for us. Good luck!

Pots probably need winter protection of the root zones in Chicago.

I'm not sure what roses you would grow in a planter 12" wide with 12" soil depth, and if it is above ground there might be concern about roots freezing. Possibly Gourmet Popcorn, one of the more disease-resistant mini roses by reputation.

I'm not familiar with Lady EM, but otherwise that is a good selection of landscape roses. Nearly Wild is more susceptible to blackspot than the others. I love Carefree Sunshine, which would be pretty under the window. It is partially cane-hardy in z 5 and could be grown at 3' or 4' depending on pruning. The Meidilands (including Carefree Delight, a very good one) are large shrubs with small flowers, easy care, free-blooming. The KOs have larger flowers and are also vigorous.

Oh, and if you want some plants with sexier, more "normal" rose flowers, consider the great Buck roses Earth Song, Prairie Harvest, Quietness, Griff's Red, which are disease resistant and a bit hardier than hybrid teas.
