Help picking some roses for my Mom

Hi guys, my Mom is going through some stuff medically right now, she's getting over a serious heart attack from about a year ago and now has come down with Bell's Palsy - suffice to say she's pretty depressed right now and I am so far away I can't even give her a hug. I was thinking I'd like to surprise her with some roses - maybe that will cheer her up.

She lives in North Texas (McKinney) and has a decent size yard. Right now she's mostly growing HT's, Austins & Floribunda's, but I really want to introduce her to some of the older varieties of roses. I was thinking Noisette's, Tea's ... what ever might do really well in that climate without too much care as she can't really spend too much time out working the yard with her heart condition. Something that will really really thrive in her garden. I definitely want to include Pink Gruss an Aachen because of Randy ... any other suggestions? I'd probably narrow the list down to about 6 or so roses. She's got a lovely Pergola that was built last year that is crying for a rose to grow on it.

Any and all recommendations are welcome!

Aprille, I think MAC will do well in Texas, but the Texas crew can tell you best.

My wishes go to her. Bells Palsy is hard. BTW, there is now a vaccine for it.

I am sorry about your mom and hope that the roses you're going to get help cheer her spirits.

Ones I can recommend from growing them when I lived in McKinney a number of years ago that were healthy and grew well are Duchesse de Brabant, Archduke Charles, Katy Road Pink, Climbing Pinkie and Marie Pavie. These are very easy care.

Any of the Earthkind Roses should do well for her, I think, in that area. Best wishes to your and your mom.

aggierose, it's my favorite garden center in all of North Texas. Here are directions: They are between Forest Lane and Royal Lane and between Hillcrest and Central Expressway at 7700 Northaven Rd. Dallas, Texas 75230. It's in the middle of a nice residential area on Northaven Road. Depending upon where you are coming from: Â· From Central Expressway South bound, exit at Churchill/Forest Lane and continue south 1.3 miles on the access road to Northaven Rd. Go right on Northaven for 2 blocks. The store is on your left. Â· From Central Expressway North bound, exit at Forest Lane loop around to the south bound service road for .3 miles. Go right on Northaven for 2 blocks. The store is on your left. Â· From LBJWest bound, exit Coit Road. Go south on Coit 1.3 miles to Northaven Rd. Go right on Northaven for 2 blocks. Please help me move (or not) my mom's rose

The easiest way would be to dig the dormant plant in November, cut back the top, stuff it in a trash bag for the trip, and replant it in the Maine garden as a bare root. Will the ground be frozen Nov. 30? I would guess not in Mass., maybe but probably not in Maine. You could open the hole in advance, prepare the soil, and pile leaves over the dirt pile to keep it from freezing. Late fall planting of bare roots used to be standard procedure in zone 5. Also, mulch heavily around the Mass. plant when cold weather arrives to be sure it will remain diggable. If you transplant to a pot now, it will probably defoliate and use up energy growing new leaves, which would be killed by frosts very soon. Then you have the hassle and risk of overwintering a pot.

I only grow Boscobel from your list, and I think it's one of Austin's better roses--love it. For beauty, scent, and good blooming, I suggest Munstead Wood. Another beauty, with great scent and blooms all the time is Rouge Royale. Other good smellers and bloomers are Golden Celebration and Tamora. Diane

'Perle d'Or' is an Earthkind selection and is supposed to a wonderful, fragrant, easy care rose.

The Earthkind rose list doesn't always work wonderfully well in the SF Bay Area but it was developed especially for Texas. I think you could rely on it confidently there.

Other than that, I don't have any rose suggestions to offer. I did want to say that I'm sorry your mother is going through such a rough time. It is painful to be at such a distance from a parent when they are in bad health. Hugs to you, as well as your mother, and best wishes.

Two more?.... I have heard that 'Madame Antoine Mari' is a slam-dunk winner in many parts of Texas, as is 'Mrs. Dudley Cross'. 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' and its many sports are also supposed to be good there.

Your selection sounds gorgeous so far.

what color do you want for her, Aprille? I second Perle d'Or also; it is a great rose!

You might try looking at the Chamblees rose site at the Earthkind roses they have for sale. They are in Tyler, east of Dallas.

Other ones I grow here in north Alabama that are Earthkind that I really like are Ducher and Spice. I love both these roses and think they'd be good in McKinney also. I understand there is a demonstration garden up north of Mckinney now; I wish she could go and see what they have, but don't know about the hours, etc.

I'm really sorry to hear about your mother, Aprille. From reading The Organic Rose Garden whose author was Texas based, I would like to suggest a very friendly, constantly blooming rose of a heart warming pink named Nur Mahal.

Add "Emmie Gray." We got it last fall, at ARE.
It's the most cheerful, winning rose you could imagine. Single looms open slightly cupped, in a
strong pink, veined with deeper pink, and age as they open flat to a real Chinese Red.
Lovely China foliage, too.
And how can you bypass 'Old Blush'??
It's almost emblematic of roses in TX.

The Earthkind rose Caldwell Pink needs to be on the list too. It's darned near bulletproof here in north Louisiana.

Last I heard it was official. In fact, on the signs at ARE, they acknowledged that name. GREAT rose!
