Striped Rose Suggestions

My neighbor just cut down some large bushes next door, changing a shade garden into a sun garden overnight. Yeah! More room to plant roses!

I'm looking to put teas and other old roses in this part of the yard. It gets full sun from about 10am until 5pm. I live in Livermore, CA -- very hot and dry in the summer (90+ is common, winter gets frost but no snow.

I'm looking for a great striped rose to put here. It can be big - there's room for it. Looking through books I saw Variegata di Bologna and loved it - so striking! I looked on HelpMeFind and it said it was only ok to zone 6a? I guess it's a Bourbon but I don't know anything about that class.

Does anyone have suggestions of roses to consider? I like the drama of that rose which I think would nicely set off some of the more subtle teas that I have as little 1 gal to plant there - Grandmother's Hat, Rubens and Archduke Charles.

Besides the beauty of the bloom itself, I'd like an attractively shaped bush and good rebloom. Scent is not as important to me since I can't smell most roses.

Thanks for the suggestions. You've all given me some very good advice when I was designing my front yard.

'Vick's Caprice'

The striping is very subtle. In fact, I would call it marbled rather than striped.

Debbie -- We grew Variagata di Bologna for a few years, and never got it to bloom. At all.
I think it needs some winter chill. (You may have enough of that) but I think it's either not remontant, or not VERY remontant.

I still like 'Ferdinand Pichard' which we grew here for some years. It had good disease-resistance, and given time, it can achieve some size. The coloring is striking. (It is the source of the stripes in 'Fourth of July' and 'Scentimental')

We grew (hmmm ... still grow, I guess) 'Panachee d'Orleans,' but it's striping is so "subtle" as to be non-existent. It's on its way out, as a water-conservation measure.

You might look at 'Marbree' -- a portland, with good repeat. It's speckled, rather than striped, but very striking.

I would avoid Rainbow, which mildewed like mad down here, but which also mildews at least some in the Sacramento City Cemetery.

Gean and Kippy: I'm so glad to hear how things have gone for 'Betty'! I totally approve of her move to a warmer climate - just as my own 'Betty' had to be given away to someone who had a good place for her. I hated watching her (and the other two) decline slowly - it was as if I were torturing them. I grow Ferdinand Pichard (only a two-year old bush at present), but so far am well pleased. Most sources say it is a Hybrid Perpetual, though, not a Bourbon. The blooms are on the smaller side of Modern Roses...more like the size of a V. di Bologna but the red parts of Ferdinand is more red than VDB. I can't comment yet on the repeat bloom...bush isn't mature yet. It does seem to be doing well with blackspot this year and it was labeled an outstanding rose for disease resistance in the Montreal Botanical Gardens trials of a decade ago. "OK, you two, I'll go and maybe put in a word here or there at the RHA if I think I have anything I can contribute. But don't expect brilliance, please!" Why, Seil? You gonna save all of your brilliance for HERE? LOL! No, I'll expect the same level of brilliance, or perhaps a bit more as you become more self confident there, as you continually share with us here. And, why can't you, or anyone else be thought of in the same "class" as Mr. Moore? He started by raising self set seed of Mlle Cecile Brunner because he liked it and it was THERE in his mother's and grandmother's gardens. He was the first to admit his failures, in fact, those were some of the funniest stories he'd tell, and he'd laugh at them harder than any of us. Why not? I'm not ashamed to admit I goofed and picked up Sweet Limes instead of lemons for a lemon meringue pie. Looked right and I didn't pay attention. I thought, "these are rather MILD" and they made a very pretty, if TERRIBLE pie. He messed up and learned from the goofs and other people, and he adored sharing everything he knew with anyone who wanted to know. Why wouldn't any of the rest of us? We're all potential "Ralph Moore" types in training. His real genius was in not believing "that won't work", "you can't DO that". Tell him that and he proved you wrong, repeatedly. Pinocchio had and may still have, a great deal to offer, but it is notoriously DIFFICULT to deal with. So many offspring means there were many more seeds created to obtain them. It is a notoriously terrible seed bearer. It often makes them, but they most often don't germinate. Pollen from it is more reliable, but even that doesn't guaranty the seed is going to sprout. Mr. Moore loved that one, too, and it fought him every step of the way. It's honestly one we discussed on several occasions and he complained about how "stubborn" it was each time. It didn't stop him from using it and continuing to try, nor did it stop Pinocchio from being as obstinate as it has always been. Jack Harkness wrote virtually the same thing about Cecile Brunner. He and his nursery tried repeatedly to get something good out of her, with no success. He wrote that he was envious of Mr. Moore's successes with her because of how many failures he'd had trying her. mendocino_rose, you'll make the level of effort you are comfortable with when you're comfortable doing it. It really is NOT hard! And, it can be done successfully with just your fingers. I collected baby food jars for my pollen when my nephews were infants and still use the same ones nearly twenty years later. Office Depot and Staples sell boxes of a thousand paper string tags for about $17. You write the pollen parent on the tag and slip it around the stem of the hip. You don't need the seed parent's name until you collect the hip. No greenhouse, no laboratory, nothing computerized required. Nature does it without even using baby food jars. Why can't we? You both have wonderful collections of roses which do well where you are and which you love things about. Choose the best performers for consideration for parents. See which ones set lots of seed by themselves and consider them as "mothers". Germinate self set seed from them to learn how so when you create seed, you don't waste the effort by trying to learn to raise those. You'll get the hang of it quickly, just don't MAKE it hard or involved. Don't let it intimidate you. If you make a mistake, so what? Another part of Mr. Moore's 'genius' was, like water, electricity and gophers, if something didn't work this way, he just went at it from another direction until it worked. Eventually, "The rose will find the way". Keep it simple and the fun will increase dramatically. Change your mind set and your word speak. You aren't a "dummy". Ignorance and lack of experience are EASILY overcome and corrected. None of us was born with full knowledge of it all, why should you be expected to have been? We all stand on each other's shoulders to reach higher. A German breeder raises a break through seedling, which breeders in many other countries utilize differently than he thought of, creating even more outstanding roses. You're going to take an idea someone here suggests and you're going to think to yourself, "Why on earth did they do it that way? THIS is so much easier!", then you'll share that and someone else is going to improve on it even further. Kim

Oh, now, that Candy Stripe -- that's a WOW.
I had, years ago, something that purported to be 'Candy Stripe,' but which had no stripes.
It came from Hortico, and I didn't know enough to realize I had a mis-labelled rose.
Vintage has it Custom Propagation, so maybe there's hope that one day they'll put it on the available list.

Another you didn't mention is 'Careless Love,' which I have always loved. (See link below)
It doesn't have the vigor of the rest of the Radiance group, but its color is sooooo striking.

Soutine is a striped florist rose

rainbow is a striped tea

Rosa mundi is a striped once bloomer but gorgeous

Moore's Striped rugosa is beautiful

I have a striped rose that I got from Ashdown that I love. It is a Delbard that is called Guy Savoy Right now it is one of the healthiest roses in my yard and even after being cover with blooms a month ago it is now covered with buds.

I've always had some trouble with Variagata too and we do get winter chill. I remember reading that they had trouble with it at Sissinghurst. I forget why. I've had great success with Camille Pisarro. It might be more modern looking than you like. This year I planted a striped moss. I can't remember the name properly now. It might be Oelliet Panache. I saw this in a PNW garden and it was totally charming. Scentimental grows gigantic here. I've actually put it on an arch. In the spring it is very attractive, summer not so much so and the fragrance varies with the weather. Madame Driout is enchanting but disease prone. I still wouldn't dig her out. She might love Livermore.

*** In addition to not blooming, it also grew quickly to be as big as a bus.

Scentimental grows gigantic here.

*** Tom Carruth used it as a climber in his own garden.
We grew it for years, and I enjoyed it, though oddly, I never cut it for the house.
We removed it to make space for a Found Rose, and I'm happy with that.

rosecorgi - Does that mean you love roses and corgis?
I know I do...
I live over the hill from you in Tracy. The only striped rose I have is Scentimental, 8' tall bush. What form are you looking for in your rose? I grow Cramois Superior in the climbing form and the blooms are red with some white center streaks. It blooms non stop from April-Nov. Arching growth and flexible canes..

For big, bold color (and fragrance to match) you really can't beat SCENTIMENTAL. Just be forewarned that the vase life is very short. Then again, the repeat bloom is fast and furious. This reproduction Floribunda is always in bloom. Plant it with some Star Gazer oriental lilies for an absolutely stunning effect. Can you just imagine how good that would smell?

Wow! So many choices. I'd really prefer an old rose type for this new bed (I have enough moderns) but rebloom is very important to me, so I don't know what to do! They're so beautiful and dramatic! I need to keep researching each to see which will be best for me.

Daun, yes I have three corgis! Quite a handful. The roses are in the backyard since it's one of the few flowers besides trees that they respect. I'm probably the only one on the forum who likes roses with thorns (thorns = corgi respect!)

That photo of Scentimental is out of this world! What a great mix with the lilies. My husband would love it - scent is lost on me.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep thinking!

I've been reading this thread with interest, as I would like to have a reblooming, disease resistant, striped rose one day.

Would that narrow it down to Scentimental? I am in SE Pennsylvania, btw, so would it get BS here?

What about Moore's Striped Rugosa? Does anyone have that?

I shovel pruned Moore's Striped Rugosa. It was a total black spot disaster without spraying. Scentimental is also prone to black spot. Your best bet for a no spray, reblooming striped rose is CARELESS LOVE.

Robert has moore's striped rugosa in his no spray garden and it looked beautiful when I way it on memorial day. Go figure.

I LOVE Careless Love!
Had it years and years ago, not knowing what it was.

It's not the strongest grower of the Radiance clan, but it is so beautiful. I have a little baby plant outside in a 1-G.
