After year 3: the roses that do well for me

It is the 3rd season that I have been playing around in the mud outside in the gardens here. Too early to know what mature plants will do, but I can share what does well for a beginning gardener here so far in inland Orange County, California.

I am not a good enough gardener to make English Roses grow well. I know it can be done in this area, because I have seen Hoovb's magnificent garden. The only Austin that does well for me here is Golden Celebration. The 10 other varieties in the collection don't do well for me.

The varieties that are best so far are pretty eclectic, and include both old and new roses. Here they are:

Teas:

Souvenir de Pierre Notting Â a stupendous rose. Gorgeous foliage, constant blooms, lovely bush formÂleaf for leaf, probably the best rose on the hilltop here.

Etoile de Lyon Â not far behind Pierre NottingÂ A lovely rose that is clean for me, grows nicely and wonderful flowers.

Mme. Berkeley Â foliage unusual and beautiful, flowers to die forÂtook a long time to gain vertical momentum, but is doing well now.

Mrs. Dudley Cross Â no one mentions the wonderful fragrance of this plant!

None of these have a spot of disease here, not even mildewÂever.

Hybrid Perpetuals

Grandmother's Hat - a great rose. If you live in OC, get it.

Hybrid Teas and Grandifloras:

Gemini Â after SdPN, Gemini is probably the best rose here. Clean wonderful flowers, a great garden rose, and a beautiful plant. Very fine for cut flowers as well.

Pope John Paul II Â very nice form for flower and the bush, good in a vase too.

There are others that look promising, both old and modern, but they are too young to tell...but to give a 'sneak preview'...

Mons. Tillier is gonna be a heartbreaker

Niles Cochet is looking great

Mme. Berard looks promising

Marie van Houtte looks verrry promising

Moderns that look very promising

Ronda, I was tranferred from music director to development office here on April 16...and it is very time-consuming work. I still lurk on the forum, but posting and pictures especially are very time-consuming. When I have a free moment to garden or exercise, I take it greedily, and there'e generally very little time left for posting. I have missed you all very much. I am sure that when I am used to this new work, the schedule will open up to include more posting. I am in the middle of cutting the lavenders back now, and that's a real project! :-)

Hi Michellemarie: Thanks for the tip on the soot issue. We had some trouble getting a specialist to install in that area, so the guy who installed maybe got the logs a little bit off when positioning? When we first installed, the flames did not show up as well as the showroom model did. I asked about the log placement then, and he told me there was only one way to install the logs. After some use, I began noticing the soot--but the flame, for some reason, looks much better. (Maybe DH got in there and moved the logs....I'll have to ask him about that.) I will be going into the showroom where we bought the unit, as the switch which controls the blower has not been working, and I have to pick up a new one of those, so I will see what I can learn then about the log placement. Guess I can show them that picture. The "local" vendor (which is on the mainland) told me they use a generalist from another island to service those units, so I was not sure he would be any more knowledgeable than my install guy was. I'm so glad you mentioned the soot though, because I did not know anything about the log placement, only that the flame seemed not right to begin with, and then the soot appeared. Now I know there is an issue for sure...so at least I can have some confidence when I talk to the folks who sold me the unit. Despite these installation/adjustment issues, we really love that fireplace though! (Makes me want one in every room each time I walk past it). Thanks so much for the help!

I'd try to get more information first. If you bring a general 'She's not talking much' concern to your pediatrician, you're unlikely to get a response that's especially helpful. But if you can be more specific, your Dr. will have a much clearer sense whether or not *something* should be done, and a better idea of what that should next step be. First - Take a sound inventory. Set aside some quiet time for just you and your 3 year old, and with an old children's book (Dr. Seuss would be great) that you don't mind writing in, read her a series of short sentences (one at a time) and ask her to repeat them back to you, exactly the way you read it to her. In this test, you're looking to see what sounds she can make correctly. At 3, she's not supposed to have all her sounds down, but knowing what she does will be helpful. When choosing a book for this exercise, choose one that has a variety of sounds rather than a lot of repetition. In the book, underline what she says reasonably well, and circle the sounds she misses, and write down what she does instead. It may help to tape record her and supplement your notes later. But this exercise will give you a good idea what sounds she can produce. Her articulation at 3 will NOT be perfect, but it there are many sounds she's not even close on, then tell your Dr. you have reason to believe she has problems with articulation. Then do some simple tests of her receptive language -- what she understands. Ask her to put the ball under the table, then on top of the chair, then beside the bear. Have her show you the blue car or the small dog. Play with her and use lots of smiling to keep her engaged and having fun. Be careful NOT to use any gestures - if she often doesn't understand your words, she'll already be adept at picking up your non-verbal clues. Then try two-step directions- "Please bring me the ball and the bear." "Please close the door, then open the book." If she has a lot of trouble with this, tell your Dr. you have reason to believe she has problems with receptive language. Then see how she uses the verbal language she does have. A lot of professionals will jump right to the "Chances are the 7 year old does the talking for her" line as a reason to wait and do nothing. You need to know before you go in whether this is true or not. Talk to your older child, and tell her you'd like her help in getting little sister to talk more. When little sister uses a single word or gesture, prompt for more verbal language. If she points to a cookie, look confused and wait. (Even though you know what it means.) If she says "cookie" (or something close) ask "Do you want a cookie? Can you say 'I want a cookie' ?" and wait to give her the cookie until she does her best to ask. Manners later - this is a speech test ;-) Try to get her to use as much language as she has. If her speech and language is developing normally, this will not be very difficult for her (mildly frustrating, perhaps). If this causes a lot of difficulty or tantrums, particularly if she just grabs your hand to get the cookie instead, tell your doctor you have concerns about her expressive language. If you still have concerns after doing your own tests, the first steps should be a referral to an Audiologist for a hearing test, and to a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) for a speech & language evaluation. It's usually pretty quick to see an Audiologist, but often there are long waits (several months) to see good pediatric SLPs. If you have concerns, politely insist that your Dr. refer you. The last thing you want is for your pediatrician to "Let's wait and see" then a six month wait for an SLP appointment. (That's what happened to us, and my son ended up having very serious speech and language problems and was more than two years behind when he was first seen at age 3.)

Wow! These are all truly helpful, wonderful suggestions! I'm scribbling the names down as fast as I can. It will be a fun weekend of the computer on one side and stacks of rose books on the other. Thank you Sheila for your words of encouragement - Oh I forgot about Heirloom - good call! I wil send pictures ... Amazing list Christopher - was hoping you might have some ideas. Thank you! I saw from some other posts you are not too far geographically. The Terrace is about 10 wide. The rose will go in one far corner and I'll train along the back. I love those Hybrid Musks - Ballerina, Buff Beauty, Katherine and Penelope (if memory serves). They were always very solid, dependable roses for me - I'll check out them out. Orfeo in a tree sounds dazzling! I realize (and accept) that it's going tot take time to get the rose to settle in and perform, which is why I'm eager to get it in this Spring. Yes yes Camaieux!! That must be it Carol! I totally agree it's that grey thing that happens as the flowers decline. Yep - fragrant once bloomer. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and ideas - cheers!

Definitely go ahead and clean up the old mulch, get rid of any diseased material, any nasty old leaves. Put down fresh clean mulch. But personally I would not actually spray with anything yet. I would wait until it's closer to spring. The deal with winter in the South (even the upper south) is this: many roses really don't go fully dormant at all. They winter over like other bushes, and can even put on some new growth in nice temperatures. But it's still winter, and we could still get a killing frost at any point. My approach is to just sort of not stress them. Don't feed them, don't put oils or sprays on them, just let them do their thing, whatever they want to do. They will make it through the winter fine. As you probably have realized, in the South the trick with roses is getting through the summer, not the winter. I've never lost a rose to winter. It's all about summer: disease pressure, water issues, etc.

Surely being part of the Development office implies outreach. We will miss you beautiful photos and comments, but I understand time constraints.

It sounds as if your young garden is doing splendidly and you have a wonderful list of maturing roses.

Jerome, I have also noticed your absence. It is good to hear from you.

Since you mention problems with Austins, may I suggest Charles Rennie Macintosh? This pale pink older Austin particularly good in hot weather climates, and I think it would do well for you without any need to fuss. I certainly give it only a minimum of care here.

Jerome -- I always enjoy your posts & found the listing & comments here especially interesting.

I'm glad to see that you're growing the Barni HT 'Roberto Capucci'. I'm going to be surprised if you don't continue to be impressed with this rose & its huge blooms. Once it hits its stride in your garden, I hope you'll find time to post a photo of it. REAL curious to see how it responds to life in CA.

Jerome, it was great to hear of the roses that are doing well for you there. We only grow one rose in common, Mrs Dudley Cross, and I'm glad to hear she does well there too.

Oh my gosh, I am so touched by these responses. Well I have missed you all too! Development work is not so bad...but there's less time for other things, and when faced with a free afternoon, with a lot of lavenders to prune and plant...I'll take the garden every time. I am sure that once I get the hang of this new work, I'll start posting a lot more again. I will take photos asap too. Thing is, we had some wind "events" in early May, and the double row of red Austins (Dark Lady and Wllm Shakespeare 2000) had to be pruned very closely because of the damage to the new growth. Not much worth photographing at the moment...although some of the irises are wonderful.

Carol, you are great....I will consider the forum outreach! That's great. Everyone's welcome to visit! Luanne did already.

Rosefolly, thanks for the CRM recommendation. I never feel more then maladroit gardener than when it comes to Austins. My Evelyns are about 20" high, year three...and I saw this massive thing at the Descanso gardens here on Monday, must have been 7' high, and the flowers....

Bill...okay, this spring, Felicite put out a great flush for the second year in a row. It is a great rose, even here with non-winters. Mme. Plantiers did nicely too, even though the drought and stuff fried the blooms. Mme. Plantier is one of the few roses here that the scent "wafts"...amazing. Love it. Mme. Hardy gave me 3 flowers, all the rest of the growth was 'blind'...no flower buds. Maybe it doesn't get cold enough here, don't know what's the problem. I'm just going to prune her as if she bloomed this next week, following David Stone's marvelous advice. It's okay if she doesn't bloom every year, I have her in a space where the shrub is nice, and getting a flush is pure serendipitous grace.

windeaux, Roberto Capucci is a very good plant. The flowers are enormous and the petals must be very thick, because they don't fry, and I have this in a place that gets blasted. I got it from RU, and I must say, all the plants I've gotten from them have been amazing.

Randy, we also have Golden Celebration and Reine des Violettes in common...:-) Pretty soon RdV will be in my 'doing well' list. I have noticed more flushes on it each year.

jbfoodie; you are going to love SdPN. It is a great great rose. I have two here, one from Vintage and the other from RU. Both are bloom machines, good for picking and have that old fashioned "Lux Soap" smell to my nose. Remember those orange octagonal bars they used to make a million years ago?

Thank you so much for following up Jerome. I'm expecially pleased to hear the two Albas did well for you. Something completely magical about Albas, and they touch me in a way no other roses do.

My (hopefully not quixotic) mission is to grow Alba Maxima for my wife (it is her very favorite rose) as a romanic gesture. Tough because I know we don't have the "perfect" climate...and for this rose in particular I'd really hate to fail.

But seeing Alba Maxima thriving in conditions similar to mine, and hearing your Albas are doing well, brings me feelings of hopefullness. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Plantier does well here because I gather she has some noisette in her (?). Felicite Parmentier is just pure gift. I had a gallica that has not given me one flower and as I said, Mme. Hardy is a mixed bag. I could sigh that we can't grow them well...but then I am so glad we have those teas and noisettes.
