cottonwood trees!
Comments (19)Really good points made by commenters here. I have 5 cottonwood trees in my yard, as do my neighbors and the empty lot next to me. These trees are a double edged sword that I've learned to not only live with, but enjoy and accept. There are pros and cons: Pros: 1. They grow fast and tall quickly 2. They provide excellent shade, wind protection and privacy 3. Their leaves flutter with the slightest breeze, which is charming 4. They attract and provide good shelter for birds and other wildlife Cons: 1. They are incredibly messy. In drier years especially, they release a huge amount of cotton. This makes clean up a constant job in the summer. I'm not able to have a flower garden in back because of this. Too much clean up with mulch, so I've resorted to rock pathways and shrubs. In the fall, the leaf cleanup is considerable. 2. Constant sticks in the yard 3. Large limbs can fall, particularly older trees. Last year we had multiple limbs fall in a wind storm, one that nearly hit our neighbors house, and one that damaged our fence. Clean up required a lot of chain sawing and hauling. This happened the day before we had a wedding in our backyard. All in all, I've come to love and accept them. If I cut them down, I'd have no privacy, and I've gotten used to the clean up. There's good and bad, but if I was planting in a brand new yard, I'd avoid these trees....See Morenovocore prestige vinyl in cottonwood color

Comments (10)Garden Nut -- These photos are from the original Mother Plant from which possibly-Mistress Bosanquet was collected: This huge cluster of plants is "Mistress Bosanquet", 'Mme. Plantier', and an unidentified yellow, all planted on one grave. I think "Mistress Bossanquet" (aka "Legacy of Samuel Briggs" can get to be a pretty big plant. Also seems quite clean, and I am strongly tempted to try for it....See MoreRepublic floors- eastern cottonwood
Comments (0)Hello! Anyone have republic floors in their home, specifically the eastern cottonwood from the countryside collection? I’m looking for some vinyl flooring for my house (all 3 floors) and after a looong search, stumbled upon Republic Floors. From what I can tell online, I love the look of the sessile oak, but I live in Canada and they don’t supply that colour over here :(. They do have eastern cottonwood though, which I have a sample of, but I’d like to see a whole floor with it to see how it would look all laid out. Thanks in advance!...See More- 12 years ago
