Did I kill them by potting up? (Yarrow/Rus. Sage/Shasta)

I needed to pot up several large clumps of plants to be transplanted to another area, so figured I'd do it and let them get used to the pots for a couple weeks before I took them on their car-ride to their new home in another city.

Yarrow (Paprika)

Russian Sage

Shasta Daisy

The yarrow & RS were in prime form when I did this...the Shastas had nearly gone by already. All are about 3-4 feet tall.

I think I did a bad thing :(

They look like they are dying...doing that shriveling/turning brown thing, even though they are in large pots & watered.

I screwed up?

Define watered.

The way I usually water potted plants is to throw them in a bucket until they sink. Particularly if they are in a peat based mix, this is really about the only way to make sure they are really watered and not just said Hi to by the water on its way out the bottom of the pot.

I took them out on a cloudy day over the weekend, then it rained until Tuesday.
It has been HHH for 3 days, and I soaked them this morning for about 2 minutes each with a good stream (not one that would dig a hole in the dirt, but high spray). I can see that the shastas (in a more shallow pot) dried out nearly completely, but I guess I didn't realize they'd die in only TWO days of the heat (Heat is defined as not over 90 degrees, but humid.) The other two are in 2 gallon (maybe bigger; I don't know the OFFICIAL sizes of nursery pots) pots, and were still damp to the touch, not crusty-dry like the shastas.

I did lots of work in that general area this spring. You can see just on the other side of the daiseys are some snapdragons I stuck in there for some extra color. Next year I will find something else to plant in back of those 3 yarrows. Just don't feel like doing any more this year. That is unless I just happen upon the perfect plants that I can't leave be. I have been good as I have not been to any nurseries in weeks. Otherwise I would probably still have more things I had bought that need planting.

Spider mites are often caused by warm, dry conditions. A good rinsing will help get rid of most of them. You can help keep them away with a humidifier (in heated or air-conditioned spaces) or by keeping a window open. You can also set the pots above trays of water, add gravel to your saucers so that they can hold a little water away from your plants, or put a baking dish of water on the radiator. Produce a mild breeze with a fan; good air circulation will also help with things like powdery mildew. It's important not to overwater; herbs are especially sensitive to this. Let the top inch of soil dry out before watering thoroughly. Make sure all of your pots drain properly (water runs out the bottom when you water them) and never let the plants have "wet feet", in other words don't ever let the pots sit in even a small amount of water. A spray consisting of a teaspoon of baking soda to a quart of water, with a drop or two of dish soap, will help kill powdery mildew. Apply every week or two until the problem goes away. Meanwhile, promptly remove and throw away any branches that become mildewed. Even though I don't have any outdoor growing space in my city apartment, I've been able to rig up a sunny outdoor window box that can grow herbs pretty well. Is this a possibility for you? Neem is "organic" but I wouldn't want to eat it, partly because it smells like a cross between garlic and peanut butter and tastes terrible. Some of those other sprays, even if they're "environmentally friendly," sound even worse. If you can't grow herbs indoors without sprays, I'd suggest getting rid of them. You'll get cleaner, healthier produce at the farmer's market, and there are plenty of houseplants that are more tolerant of the indoor environment.

Looks like there will be few lily blooms this year. Most are frozen and bent over. Most of the perennials and roses fared ok. Among the perennials, the Asian Ginger, Cimicifuga, Kiregeshoma and Persicarias look the worst. Even the invasives like Lysimachia and Artemisia look bad. Some of the Heucheras and Hostas look alright, but a few look bad. Among the shrubs-Weigelas and Buddleias fared the worst. I'm hoping and praying for the Japanese Maples, poor things have already leafed out, but now the leaves all look shriveled. Some Aquilegias and Campanulas were already in bud, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll still see flowers this year. The late blooming tulips look like they're ok...so far.

They should be fine. You have to remember when you dug them you damaged the roots, they are sulking - same as if you simply transplanted to another area of the garden.

Just keep them well-watered and out of direct sun (the sun will *FRY* those roots in the pots unless you used clay or other porous material, so they really need to be in a shadier area).

I've potted up so much stuff and held temporarily, and yea sometimes the stuff looks lousy the rest of the season, but as long as the roots are healthy, they'll be fine next season. :)

Also cut back the foliage. Those roots just can't supply water to foliage like they did when they were in the ground.

But if you let something in full flower ( even if it's through flowering for the moment) really dryout for even an hour, it will die. A plant going into dormancy can take it a lot better.
If I pot something up to hold, I sit it in a chicken watering pan with about 3 inches of water in it and keep it moist.
Plants need water.....they die when they get none.

You might want to keep a saucer or tray under the pots for awhile till they start perking up. Can't speak for the RS, but the yarrow and shastas are pretty tought plants, so they should be fine.

Will do. I thought about cutting them back, but didn't know if that would cause MORE problems. Haircuts tonight for all, and moving to a shadier location!

Shasta daisies will wilt after transplanting even if you're very careful. But they're tough plants and should come back. Just keep them watered. They might look bad for a while so be patient.
