two dozen loaves of stale bread,
Comments (37)Yes, Doris, I am. And it's not just me; you're making all of us sick. Doris, civilized people have known since the 1950s that you don't put bready products in the compost pile. And actually, it's not the rats, and it's not the planarians; it's the gross out factor. And don't jump down my throat, I'm not saying that you're not civilized (Or clean.); No, I'm guessing that you're really young, or maybe you live alone and you've kind of let things slide 'cause you have no one to impress? Don't comb your hair anymore? Don't care what people think about you or your yard anymore? Do you find yourself drinking milk that's been left out for a few days? Doris (May I call you Doris?), I'd like to help you. But it starts with you recognizing that you need help. You seem a little resistant. I'd like you to try an experiment. Put a piece of bread (or cereal or baguette or roll) in a dish containing water. (The water represents moisture in the atmosphere.) Wait 15 minutes. Look into the bowl. I think that'll take care of it....See MoreFreeze breaded green tomatoes for frying?
Comments (17)This is my recipe that I use. It will not follow the methodology of any canning book. Select tomatoes that will fit through the top of a widemouth quart jar. CANNED FRIED GREEN TOMATOES Core and cut green tomatoes into fat 3/4 inch slices and soak overnight in an acid - saltwater mixture (one cup of pickling salt and ½ cup of lemon juice to each gallon of spring water). Make sure all of the tomatoes are covered with the mixture. In the morning drain the tomatoes. Rinse with cold spring water, drain, and place slices in jars. To each quart of tomatoes: cover with two tablespoons of lemon juice and fill to within a ½ inch of jar top with spring water. Wipe jars and seal. Cold pack and process 10 minutes after a lot of steam comes out from around canner lid. Do not lift canner lid while water is boiling. To Fry: Drain. Place in cold water in refrigerator for two hours and then roll in egg and seasoned flour and fry like fresh green tomatoes....See Morehoppin john, pork, turnip greens, corn bread
Comments (15)There are many variations to traditional Hoppin’ John. Some cook the black-eyed peas and rice in one pot, while others insist on simmering them separately. Some also like to add the collard greens in the pot. The favorite way to eat a Hoppin’ John meal is with collard greens and corn bread. Each item on the plate has symbolic meaning for the New Year. Black-eyed Peas represent “coins,” collard greens represent money or “green backs”, corn bread represents “gold,” and if tomatoes are added to Hoppin’ John it symbolizes “health”. I've used this recipe many years! 1 large onion chopped 2 large garlic cloves 2 16 oz can drained black-eyed peas 2 cups chick broth 1 cup uncooked reg rice 1 tsp salt 2 Tbl butter Saute onion and garlic in butter until tender. Add rest of ingredients - cook 20 minutes until liquid is absorbed and rice is tender...See MoreGreen Street Zucchini Bread
Comments (7)HI Martha - You had posted this recipe on another thread which I have printed off. I wondered about substituting maple syrup for the maple flavouring but the header for the recipe says not to do that. Today we had the September birthdays celebration at work and we had a chocolate cake as well as the carrot cake from Green Street Restaurant here in Pasadena, California. Green Street does not give out its recipes, so I don’t have the carrot cake recipe to post, but I do have a recipe for their zucchini bread which is by far the best quick bread you will ever eat. You must put the exact ingredients in, and don’t substitute maple syrup for maple flavoring. I don’t know that this is precisely the Green Street recipe, but it’s so close, I doubt you would be able to tell the difference. So here it is! But I would be interested in knowing if anyone has done that. I always have real maple syrup around but never maple flavouring. I will buy some though for this recipe....See Morebrdldystlu
