lawn tractor accident

I was loading my mtd lawn tractor up a ramp into a truck and the ramp slipped out sending me and the tractor to the ground. Picture a tractor pointing to the sky like a nasa rocket ready for take off. Since that happen my hydro gear trans model number 718-0255a will no longer go into forward or reverse. Does any one know if almost turning a trans almost upside down will break the insides or tweek something inside thanks.

One of several things may have happened. First check the lever that releases the hydrostatic transmission for rolling the tractor around when the engine is not running. That lever may have gotten pulled, engaged or whatever. Another thing to check is for leaking oil. I suppose it is also possible you got air in the pump by being upside down. That may cure itself.

It is quite possible that something under the tractor was bent, or broken, by hitting on the other ramp part, or the tail-gate of the truck, or trailer. You did not state what it was being loaded onto, but it might help us to figure out what might have happened.
I was presented with a problem of a lawn tractor ramp slipping out of place, and the tractor falling against the tail gate of a dump truck! The owner brought the stacked pulley to me, and said the bottom sideflange had disappeared! I couldn't see any broken spots where it might have broken any welds, or anything, but i did see that the upper flange of the stacked pulley was doubled, instead of single!
I took it to a friend who repairs lawn equipment, and after he looked at it, he clamped it into a vise, and using a large chisel, he finally bent the lower flange down into position!
I reinstalled it and it worked as good as new!
I'd think something got bent under your machine. Look carefully for anything that doesn't look right! HTH: Rustyj

I would say IF your flywheel key is, in fact, damaged, it's a needed repair because the flywheel is going to continue to be in the wrong position, thus throwing off your mower's timing, and it's likely going to fail completely at some point, thus leaving you with a dead mower. As for the cost of a repair: almost always expensive if the shop does it for you, almost always inexpensive if you do it yourself. It all comes down to whether you actually have a flywheel key problem, and if you're willing and able to fix it yourself. On your ability to fix it yourself, it's like almost any mower repair: not complicated if you have tools and patience and attention to to detail, can read and follow directions and diagrams, aren't afraid of screwing something up, etc. The worst that can happen is usually that you end up having to take the thing to the shop, which is no worse position to be in than if you'd just done that to begin with. If your mower is still cutting grass OK, I'd certainly try to live with it as-is until the fall, when the repair backlog will be substantially less (a lot of shops now are backed-up over a month on mower repairs).

That explanation does not make sense. Something is drastically wrong with his mower. A wheel is broken, flat tires, the blade is coming off, or something. Maybe the adjusters are broken. There is no way adding even a thousand pounds on top of the deck would affect the mowing height by several inches. There is also no way he didn't drive the first 3 feet into your lawn and realize he was ruining it. I'm not interested in blame but there is really only one place to point the finger. If he is a professional, fire him. If he is a friend, make sure he has his mower checked over before coming back. You won't need his services for at least a month anyway so he has plenty of time. Turning to your grass, you are essentially reestablishing your turf from the scalped condition. If you have any Kentucky bluegrass, then you have a prayer of recovering this season. If you only had fescues, some and maybe a lot will recover. If not, though, then you will have to reseed or resod. At this time of year sod is a much MUCH better choice if you can get it. Milorganite will not speed things up. If you are on a chemical program anyway, maybe someone here can help you with a fertilizer that will give you a growth spurt. Organic fertilizers very rarely give a growth spurt. They only affect soil microbe health, and healthy microbes produce growth regulators, not growth spurters (?). Water! Yes!! Unfortunately the water will germinate weed seeds but you need coverage. You can deal with weeds later after the grass comes back. I would water daily for a few days and see how it's going. If you see some promising regrowth, then back off again on the water to every other day and keep watching as you back off to weekly watering.

i think the number 1 response to this article is everyone here asking what you can do to educate the people around you about this. my brother in law lets my 7 year old drive his mower when my son is over there. i have repeatidly asked him not to, but i cant stop the kid from seeing his grandparents. once he let him drive is a mile down the road to my other brother in laws house. my son was driving mower, with BIL behind him in his truck. what if he drove down into the ditch? what if a speeding motorist lost control? there are so many unknowns that can happen in an instant. i do not let my children ride on it with me, nor do i let them drive it. they are too young to be able to react to a situation like (most) adults would. the only exception is *IF* i have the deck off, i will let them ride in my dump cart, but only at low speeds (gears 1,2,or 3). i dont even allow them out in the backyard when i am mowing. ive seen whata a blade can shoot and how far it can shoot it. parents need to be educated that children under 16 should not be operating macheriny like this. even 4 wheelers, motorized scooters, dirtbikes, etc. the vast majority of accidents are with children.

reply by theodocus struck me as coming from the desk of the ad agency of MTD. No mention of the actual operation that involves rolling over uneven terrain and jarring action from bumps and uneven spots and the fragile fabricated axles that bend and crack easily. Oh, there is also the bushings used in place of ball bearings: bushing use requires higher horsepower to move the newer units. The Deere has points and condenser; cost $5.00 and 9.00 respectively and the sears is a solid state igntion. Newer technology is wonderful as long as it is coupled with quality assemblage in a product. I have a 1968 Sears GARDEN tractor with a 12HP Tecumseh Heavy duty cast iron engine with ball bearings and cut with a 42 inch deck and also have a 1976 John Deere GARDEN tractor with a cast iron 10 HP engine with ball bearings and cut with a 42" deck and use both alternately for mowing two acres and for tilling and moving earth, etc.. Each has cast iron axles and mutli-speed hi-lo transmissions and EACH is used for plowing, snowblowing, tilling earth, hauling 1100 lb loads in attached large carts. EACH will run circles around the new 20 plus HP light LAWN tractors made today. Spend 5,000.00 and you will have a comparable heavy duty GARDEN tractor. By the way, good luck on getting even 10 years of use with the new wonders.

Falling off a ramp while running could have put a lot of pressure on the transmission, especially if the tractor was going forward and a wheel hit the ground in such a way to force it to turn backward. With the engine shut off can you roll the tractor? If so, I would check the axle keys and make sure you didn't snap one in the fall. I suppose you could have snapped the key on the transmission pulley. Make sure the belt to the transmission is not off the pulley and is tight, and then see if you can determine if it is turning the transmission shaft, and not just spinning on it.
Anyway, check the cheap stuff first.

Yeah I would tend to follow JTBs advice on keep it simple look for the cheap solution 1st :) .
