Carefree Beauty and White Carefree Beauty

Carefree Beauty has a pretty bush, but the blooms are not holding well. Even though our weather has been irregular (rainy), other roses are ok. This is my second year for Carefree Beauty, and I thought she had a better reputation.

I have 2 Carefree Beauties and one White Carefree Beauty. The white one is a mess. Again, the bush is ok, but none of the blooms seem to last at all. I intend to work with CB, but I cannot find any good information on the white one. I don't even think there is a nursery carrying it anymore.

Do any of you know anything about the white one?

No, I don't know anything about the white one. Never even heard of it before. But I did use to grow the regular one. It was a perfect bush. Wish all roses could be that healthy and nicely shaped. Yes, her blooms lasted a nano-second, but they looked nice and had large petals. I had to remove her long ago because she quickly outgrew the limited space I had for her ... way back then I didn't know you couldn't trust the sizes stated by the vendors when you live in the south.

I still grow a smaller sized descendant of Carefree Beauty ... 'Thomas Affleck', hybridized by the Michael Shoup organization at The Antique Rose Emporium. Carefree Beauty was a good momma, imparting much of her toughness to her offspring.

"White Carefree Beauty" gets no Google hits except a post by you, Sammy. Where did you get it? It may be a made-up name rather than a sport of CB.

Don't give up on CB, it's a fine easy-care rose for garden display, not of course for cutting.

Very nice and well-tended garden, Jess. Looks like you have a full-time gardener with manicure scissors. That is a real WOW to behold, so neat and so well-tended. Beautiful pictures of Carefree Wonder. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of my Carefree Wonder plants. They are really blackspot magnets in the South but Carefree Beauty seems to enjoy the South, so I grow her in multiples.

What's wrong with another CB if you like it? I saw some interplanted with dark purple-flowered hosta (never been able to find one with that dark of purple blooms) and white-flowered ones circling the gazebo at the park, have a photo of it somewhere here. Somebody from the hort club told me that's what the rose was. There is a whole circular garden of what looks like those a block or two from here on a busy street. They are real bloom machines for sure. I can't tell what they have interplanted with them. Don't have a photo of that garden. Hosta might not grow in the sun and heat there, don't know. It's still there but not nearly as lush as it was back on Sep 6 03 when I took the photo (looking south but blooming on north side as well, best blooms of CB were there actually but didn't want the people in the gazebo in the photo). Plus my photo looks like it's winding down for the season but not so on the other shots. We get scorching heat here in the summer; that gazebo may get a little shade from nearby trees. Normally I'm not big on hosta, but they often have their place. I fell in love with that rose but have very few sunny spots for it, says it likes full sun. I'll take the photo out if it's disruptive.

Kate, thank you for your pictures. I love that Queen of Sweden hedge. It's beautiful. But in my blackspot-incubator of a yard, it would be challenged, I think. Home Run looks like a bush of impatiens! Terryjean, I wish I lived by you. I'd love to see all these roses up close. Would sure make the decision on which to use much easier. And then we can go figure out where Pappu lives too and haunt his yard. But I live in Nebraska, so no can do. Rather than narrowing down my list, I now have 4 on the list: Carefree Wonder Carefree Beauty Earthsong Country Dancer I'm thinking that I may just have to plant a specimen of each in my yard this spring and wait 2-3 seasons to see what develops. It'll delay things, but at least I won't make a costly mistake for all to see in the front yard. I did that once, at my parents' when I was 16. I wanted a rose hedge even then. But I went about it totally wrong. Rather than planting all one varieties (or at least sports of one variety), I decided to mix plant Bourbons with Hybrid Perpetuals with Austins. What a mess. The Bourbons died off. The Hybrid Perpetuals died back below graft (I didn't know about own root then) and these giant roses sprang from the rootstock. One of the rootstock roses is like a tree, at least 8 X 8 every year. Then I was told that we should hedge with rugosas, so I planted rugosas in place of the dead Bourbons. Now my dad can't mow around that "hedge" b/c of the giant rootstock rose, and can't go near the middle b/c of the thorny as hell rugosas. Oh, and the Eglantyne that was supposed to stay short at the start of the hedge is now 6' tall. At various points, my salvage attempts have brought in raspberry bushes and other nonsensical additions to try and make this hedge work. It's a living reminder, to this day, of my failure at hedging. I don't want to fail again, that's why this decision is so angst-ridden and full of uncertainty for me.

Sweet Fragrance or Carefree Beauty

I have both Sweet Fragrance and Carefree Celebration (which is in the same peach-coral color scheme) in the same bed. I gave away a Carefree Beauty I was sent by mistake for the Carefree Celebration, but I think its growth habits are similar to CB but CB is more pink than peach. I love love love Sweet Fragrance! It has everything I'm looking for in a landscape rose except for, ironically, fragrance. The color stays this nice luminous apricot without much fading, it blooms pretty much nonstop, it's effortlessly hardy in my zone 4 pocket and usually cane hardy, it bushes out nicely all the way up to its height (probably 4-5 feet on an average year), it never blackspots or otherwise gets disease at least for me, and it blooms along the height of the bush if you prune that way rather than lollipops at the top of big sticks. I find the color plays nicely with others, but is still noticeable from the street, which is important for a landscape rose. Here's a photo of SF with friends in an average rose year: This photo shows a spent bloom off to the left, as well as a fat and happy bumblebee enjoying the SF pollen. I don't find this dead bloom as noticeable at a distance as the Carefree Beauty faded blooms below, and SF drops its petals cleanly (though you still need to pop of what's left) whereas CB can hang onto those dead petals an awfully long time. In contrast, Carefree Celebration (and I'm going to presume Carefree Beauty) is equally hardy and blackspot free. I don't get appreciable rust or mildew so I can't comment on that for either rose. The color is a somewhat darker coral peach when it first opens but the color fades, sometimes dramatically to be 2-tones of apricot and parchment beige in neighboring blooms. It doesn't bloom as often or as thickly as Sweet Fragrance, and it's probably shorter even in a good year staying 3-4' (too bad I put mine behind the SF). I'd move them around, but I find the dramatic color fade annoying enough that I'm glad it's a bit disguised till I get around to deadheading. Here's a full bush shot when it's reasonably happy and tidy: Here's that parchment looking effect starting on the petals long before I'd normally call them dead and nip them off: Here are Sweet Fragrance and Carefree Celebration next to each other for contrast. The lovely big fluffy bright peach blooms at the center top are Sweet Fragrance - notice how consistent they look? Now the runty half-faded blooms off to the left are Carefree Celebration - this photo has the parchment look going big time. I don't mind it in a garden setting, but I think as a landscape rose you'd notice it looking half dead when it really only needs deadheading, and you'd lose the benefit of the "low care" landscape rose. Don't get me wrong, I like Carefree Celebration and I think Carefree Beauty is a good rose for that context - I don't know if some of these limitations apply to CB, though I think the blooms are on the smallish size. It's just that Sweet Fragrance beats it hands down in my yard. Sweet Fragrance is probably in my top 10, or at least top 20 roses, while Carefree Celebration might not make the top 100 (remember I have around 1000 roses, so it's still relatively good). The main down side I could see of Sweet Fragrance in a landscape might be its height if it gets beaten down by winds or other effects, since it would probably get to 6' in your zone. Randy, I did not know that THomas Afflect was a descendant of Carefree Beauty. Is it not also a descendant of Basye's Blueberry? I don't have a very accurate memory for these things.

Michael. Last year when I realized that I was going to have to discard so many roses, I wanted to try this rose. (I was discarding all of my Prairie Stars that were white.) I have it listed as White Katy Road Pink. I purchased it from Chamblees last year.

I have not seen it listed in the ARS Handbook, but it is listed in HMF.

I am not impressed with it at this point, but it may be because of the rain and thrips.

OK, it is a sport of CB, then. Have you tried Paloma Blanca for a white?

I am growing White Katy Road Pink from Chamblees. It is growing and blooming well. It is just a white sport of CB. I like the color- mostly white w/ a slight blush of pink.

Michael, is Paloma Blanca good for a no spray garden? I am actually looking for roses that can remain relatively clean in my garden rather than a specific color. After this wet spring, I realize that it would be a good idea to grow a few more reds - or roses that will not be so vulnerable to the "droop" after rain, the thrips and cucumber beetles. I will look into the Paloma Blanca. Many of the Buck roses have done quite well for me.

Sabalmatt, that is the color of mine too, but every single bloom so far has been either attacked by thrips, cucumber beetles or rain. At this point I have not had one clean unaffected rose from that bush.

Sammy, I don't have Paloma Blanca yet, but folks in the Midwest and Upper South have reported it disease-resistant and not too badly plagued by the usual white-rose problems. My BS-resistant Bucks are Earth Song, Country Dancer, Prairie Harvest, and Winter Sunset. A couple more look promising, but I don't want to comment yet.

Try the floribunda Irish Hope, very resistant for me, gorgeous and fragrant.

CB is the best rose in my garden without any question!! She has clean foliage and has just finished a 2nd complete bloom-out. I need to clip off at least 200 hips so she'll bloom again. I don't find that her blooms blow too fast. They'll keep 2-3 days at least. This past cycle flowers were much smaller than the 1st spring flush but both produced the same number of flowers- hundreds! She is a big shrub but is a great performer in every way. Mine came from Chamblee's thru a local vendor. She's about 7 years old and gets better every year!

Michael, I am trying to get as many Buck roses as I can, which means all that will not get damaged by diseases. I have what you have listed and quite a few more.

Sometime I intend to start a list of successful or unsuccessful Bucks. anyone else can do it of course, if they wish.
