Eglantine has leaves that smell like green apples, especially when there's been a rain or a morning dew and the sun is evaporating those water droplets off the leaves, but it also is a rose bush that very much looks like "a briar". The bush's appearance is "rustic", and it also is a big rose. If it's happy the shrub will be at least 7' X 7', with canes and branches awkwardly growing this way & that. I think it's a wonderful rose for a hedgerow or the right landscape, if you have the room for it, but it's not at all "svelte". (Please also understand that I personally wish that I owned a plot of land where it made aesthetic sense to grow this rose! I LOVE THE IDEA OF LEAVES THAT SMELL LIKE GREEN APPLES!! Unfortunately, I don't live on or own such a piece of land. :( )

Hi, Kelly & Vapor, @celeste/NH Thank you for your ideas! i checked my friend’s location and she has humidity, too, so I am reworking my list. Rugosa are good. Kordes are great for no BS in humidity. Do you know what Old Garden Roses are best for zone 4 and humidity? @Kelly Tregaskis Collova Earth Angel & Madame Anisette are zone 5, but you have grown them in your zone 4. Are you zone 4a or 4 b? Where in your yard can you grow them? Maybe if you grow them on south side of home it keeps them warmer since they are not nade for your zone? However, climate has warmed all over and temps may not be getting as low as we are zoned, either. Also, did the cold winter get your Olivia? Olivia does really well in humidity. I have humidity & she gets no BS. Princess Alexandria of Kent gets BS, so I will not recommend for her. The DA roses list in my post above are zoned 4, but maybe DA are just not very hardy? Lichfield Angel, though, may be their most hardy rose-I have her and she grows no matter what where I have lost other roses. Yes, I heard less fragrant DA newer ones-thanks. Maybe if planted on south side home they will keep warmer in zone 4.

I have this red climber which I have no idea what kind it is, got it about 3 or so years ago. It's canes seem to get about 6-8 feet, and it got a beautiful spring flush and now only gets a rose or two during the summer. but the canes are growing like crazy. at first I mistaken it for blaze, since the flowers looked like a blaze, but the canes didn't get as long and the leaves were slightly different. I have done nothing to it to protect it's canes during winter, it is in a southeast corner of the house.in fact it hardly had any winter dieback except at the very tips which I just pruned off in the spring. I wish I knew what kind it was so as to advise whether it would be good in a colder climate. I want to get golden showers and autume sunset but I read they are hardy to zone 6. So I am wondering can I still grow it here with minimal protection? You know just wrap the canes with burlap and a little straw in there to create air pockets. If I ever figure out what kind it is I will tell ya all, that way you know how hardy it is, and resistant to mildew, we had more rain this year than usual, and black spot tolerant, (it has a few spots but the overall bush is healthy looking and medium green.) the canes come out red at first then darken to medium green. What climbers are winter hardy and needs only about 4 or 5 hours sunlight which I can put on the north wall? RR

I'll try to comment thou I'm only in northern Illinois. wirosarium (sp), has some Kordes roses and perhaps will see this. The one problem is that some of these are new to the state but some have been around for quite a while. I grow all of mine own root as that is what does best in my yard. When planting I place the rose so that where the branches start too form is about two inches under ground. Other than that I don't winter protect. Late fall winds usually blow leaves that catch on the bushes and I leave those where they have blown. I would not be afraid to plant most Kordes in zone4 but thats me. I have a few that are tip hardy mostly from the vigorosa and baconia groups. Don't think they sell baconia here now I got mine from Northland Rosarium back when Carol had them. I wish they would bring this group back. They are fabulous roses. The Veranda roses are vigorous and in my opinion should do well. They won't be cane hardy but crown hardy just plant deeply. In this series I have Cream, Jolie, Brilliant and Roxanne. Will get Chica when I find it. Blush will not open flowers in my zone and Brilliant will black spot but love it to much to care. It resides in my hot color flower bed. The Fairy Tale series should grow in zone4. I have had all except Red Riding Hood. Shovel prune Brothers Grimm did not care for faded flower look. Best of the group for me Floral FT and Golden FT. Love these Floral FT as an own root is short front of bed rose. Golden FT is a 5 foot rose here. They are not cane hardy but crown hardy and like the Verandas are very vigorous and return year after year. Kolorscape series vigorous and crown hardy should grow for you. I have all except Cheri and it's coming in spring. They are all beautiful and healthy roses. Biggest flowers on Lemon Fizz and Fire Opal. Sorry to talk so much when I'm not in the zone you asked for. I'm hoping you get answers from zone4. One plug for Innocensia because its tip hardy after the worst polar winter. Short compact growth and easy for underplanting by larger roses.
