black walnut tree impact on gardens, apples, etc

I have several black walnut trees in my yard, one is HUGE! I want to start using the nuts and etc, but my main concern for today is do I have to cut down the one that is so near to my garden area? Is the toxin that kills tomatoes and apple trees from the droppings (Leaves, hulls, etc?) or is it systemic, going thru( and out?) the root system? The one huge tree is very close to my apple orchard, anf the apple trees still produce like nobody's business. One of the smaller trees is near my plum tree, and that is dying. I grew tomatoes very close to a black walnut tree and they were ok, but not huge. I have .6 of an acre, and there are three medium sized walnut trees, and the 4th HUGE one. I did just cut down a 5th small tree, it was right over my strawberry garden, shading it, and dropping hulls. I hate to cut trees, but I also garden. Can I have BOTH, and how do I do that?
