black walnut tree killing spruce trees? help please.
Comments (5)Some trees will grow next to walnuts - see link below. I planted a few acres of walnut seedlings in one area of my reforestation project and used the list to determine which trees I could mix with the walnuts. I planted a lot of oaks, redbuds, and red cedars mixed in with the walnuts to add some variety, but several others will do fine next to them as well. Another option would be to remove the walnut tres and replant the spruces. I've read the juglone lasts 2-5 yrs in the roots/soil after the tree is killed so the new trees may get off to a slow start until the juglone totally fades away. john Here is a link that might be useful: Walnut Trees...See Moreare black walnut tree leaves bad for plants?
Comments (5)If the tree is near enough to the sensitive plant for its leaves to fall on it, the growth can be stunted. For example I have three double file viburnum all planted at the same time 10 years ago. The one near a black walnut (although it is at least 10 feet outside its drip line) is sbout half the size of the other two. Good luck!...See MoreTransplanting a Black Walnut/Butternut Tree
Comments (3)just be done with it... cut to ground level.. apply roundup or stump killer to the cambian ... i wouldnt even bother digging it up .. where there is one volunteer.. there are usually too many more.. find a babe and move that instead.. or order a named variety .. as suggested ... can it be done.. why not.. start by moving out the other plants.. and stat digging a 4 foot hole so you end up with about a 3 foot root mass ... etc ... way too much work in my world ... you would do it.. when the tree is dormant .. avoid the stresses of the tree trying to hold onto leaves ... in my z5.. that would be when the leaves change color in october... or in late march april as soon as the ground thaws ... i see your zip code.. but am too lazy to search your zone ... but the issue is not CAN it be done.. whether.. SHOULD it be done ... been there.. done that.. had great plans for a volunteer.. and as you.. waited wayyyy too long .... and those i tried .. this late in the game.. usually died.. lots of good exercise.. but little result .. ken...See MoreI hate black walnut trees
Comments (12)Why do you need a walnut tree for baking, just go to a good store and buy them! I feel the same as Connie M. I'm so sick of my neighbor's walnut tree. I'm surprised no one mentioned the fact that they attract rats 🐀!!! They either live in the trees or envade your yard to eat the fallen nuts. When it rains, the tree leaves secret oils that heavily stain concrete and leaves a black soot on surrounding plants. In addition, A LOT of people are seriously allergic to nuts (including me). When they are not dropping THOUSANDS of leaves or nuts, they drop these wormy-looking things all over the yard. When the leaves come out for spring, allergies 🤧 are ridiculous. They are aggressive in height and grow branches that touch the ground; basically takes over the yard...and everyone's yard it's next too. Expensive to have it trimmed ($300 for just my side) neighbor only trims the part that touces his patio and leaves the rest for his other three neighbors to deal with. I had to pay $220 to have my concrete powerwashed! And yes, i have asked the neighbors 5 times to trim the tree but no resolve. The tree is a nuisance! It provides shade, but I'd rather install a Pergola than to deal with the overload of cons!!!...See Morebulldinkie
