Isn't Mme. Hardy the white alba that has a green eye? It looks like Mme. Plantier to me but see what others think...

Its a little hard to tell from your pics, or my small laptop screen anyways..

But these appear to be true to form for the roses you ordered. Alba Maxima can have a blush to it.

Mme Plantier should be smaller white roses in clusters.. Im sure their fragrance must be great.

Others can weigh in, but they appear to be the correct roses you ordered to me.

Thanks for your help. BTW I received a response from Pickerings explaining it was the correct rose, which was greatly appreciated.

I didn't realize there was such a marked variation in flower form for Mme Plantier. I always thought Mme Plantier is somewhat reminiscent of a smaller Mme Hardy (ie. green eye; does not open fully to reveal stamens).

I just had my Mme. Plantier identified, perhaps you can look at my pics and compare them..what seems to have been the a determining factor was the splash of pink on the back of the open flower..hope this helps you, Donna

Thanks Donna. Your rose looks completely different from mine. Your flowers have the classic green eye without showing the yellow stamens. Look at my most recent pic posted above and here again:

Incidentally, below is a pic of my "Alba Maxima." Again, I am very surprised by how very pink it is, more than a faint blush.

Your post caught my eye because I too have several mislabelled roses from Pickering, including a Great Maiden's Blush which was supposed to be Alba Maxima. This will be its second season here and it definitely IS Great Maiden's Blush because I already grow GMB and they match
exactly. Years ago I ordered Paul Ricault and got Gros Choux de Hollande instead. I wrote a letter to Pickering with photos and they agreed what they sent wasn't PR....the next spring they sent me a replacement and it was ALSO Gros Choux de Hollande! I ordered Nevada and got its pink sport, Marguerite Hilling instead.

I'm not the type to make a stink, so I've just let it slide. In the meantime, the mislabelled roses have become part of my rose family and even though I didn't count on these roses, a beautiful rose is never a mistake in my eyes. I just hadn't planned on TWO of some of them!

I'm not really going to make a fuss either, as honest mistakes happen. I think it must have been some goof up with that one particular order. I had ordered four plants again with Pickerings this spring and the plants appear to be true to label.

I'm just more curious about the identity of the white rose that doesn't appear to be Mme. Plantier.

Regarding my Great Maiden's Blush, I'm contemplating on moving it since it is planted in the midst of my white garden and is really sticking out right now.

They're both beautiful though.

I am thinking that GMB might be Small Maidens blush instead because the SMB is probably Alba Maxima..does that make sense? I ordered SMB and Alba Maxima a while back(05) and they seem reversed...The so called SMB is always white and the so called Alba Maxima is always blush-but smaller than my GMB. I have most of the avaliable Albas and I for one can see how they could get confused..how in the world would you know? I have that Mme Plantier as well-it certainly has all the growth characteristics of MP but the flower does not seem nearly double enough. Mine is growing up through a tree and I never really noticed how very loose the flowers were.

Yes, the MP from Pickerings is very perplexing. I agree that the growth habit is similar and from a casual glance, the plants do certainly resemble each other. I almost wonder if there are actually two different plants circulating out there, both named Mme. Plantier. Or perhaps climate/weather can drastically affect flower form. My impression of Mme. Plantier has always been a fully double flowers with a tight central rosette, obscuring the stamens. And of course, the green eye.

Regarding my "Alba Maxima," I am 100% certain it is mislabelled. It's becoming quite apparent that this is a frequent, most probably systematic mistake with regards to Pickerings. I have emailed them about it. I really doubt it was intentional on their part, but certainly they need to check their inventory so that it does not continue to happen in the future.

Just an update. After my email correspondence, Pickerings has issued me a credit for replacement roses this fall, which is a very nice gesture and good customer service.

I'm still intent on getting Alba Maxima and Mme. Plantier. I have my fingers crossed it will be correct this time, as space is rather limited in my garden.

I still have no identity for the plant labelled "Mme Plantier." For now, I think it's safe to call it a white alba.
