Best place to buy Peace

Hi! I've been a lurker on here for a couple years, but now I have a question I can't seem to find the answer to. I remember seeing it mentioned that there is an online rose seller who has the best "mother" Peace rose. After an extended search through the forums, I can't find who the seller is. Peace is responsible for my initial "head-over-heels" infatuation with roses, and I've tried several Peace body bags without much luck. So, now I'm ready for a quality Peace rose, and I can't remember where you all said it should be bought!

Roses Unlimited was the place with a mother rose from way back when...

I got a clone from them 3 years ago and it has grown very well.

Hi Charlene,

It was Roses Unlimited, but I wanted to add my $.02 on acquiring a VID clone of Peace. Peace, as with a lot of other older HT's, has been weakened from RMV for years now. The best plant you could get would be one that is VID. My first call would be to Vintage Gardens since I know they have it VID, and I know they got it from clean stock from Univ Cal-Davis. My next call, if you are not happy with what you hear from them, would be to Appalachian Rose Nursery to see if they have it as VID. Heirloom Roses got their mother plants from England, and supposedly they are virus free, but not totally sure of that. It will only cost you a phone call to find out.

I moved last year and am in the process of recreating my orchard. As well as local sources, I bought from both Bay Laurel and Trees of Antiquity. The former has a broader array of varieties, esp the Zaiger trees via Dave Wilson Nursery, and I had bought from them years ago and had been pleased. Not this time. The trees they sent had roots that had been absolutely butchered to fit them into a very small square cardboard container. Roots were only 2-3 inches long, and all feeder roots were missing. I complained and receiving an email saying the trees were resilient and would "probably" survive. Contrast that with the trees I got from Trees of Antiquity. Ahead of shipping, I got an email from Neil to say that one of the plum trees I had ordered was of too poor a quality to send, and offering an alternative. When the trees arrived, they were in a much larger box, and had terrific root systems left intact. I have no doubt which of these nurseries I will patronize in the future. I would have liked a few more vareties that were only available from Bay Laurel, but decided not to order them. Will wait till next winter, and order from my local nursery, Walter Andersen, where I know the stock will be first rate, and where I can prepay for unusual varieties.

Thank you guys for all of the quick responces! Just as a sidenote incase anyone is interested: I also enclose in each hosta a second cheap plastic label I stick way in the dirt just incase the metal one gets displaced, so I always have the hosta name in a second place. I notice though that even black Sharpie markers do not last forever. And if the sun hits any part of it, forget it. However, if you get their Metallic Silver markers that are meant to write on dark surfaces, these really stay forever. I have had labels out in the sun for years with no fade so far. And, I also just discoved yesterday at Staples for the first time, that Sharpie now has Oil-Based Paint Markers! They are specifally made to be Weather-Water-Fade-Resistant. The pack I got was one Gold and one Silver. But on the back of the package, it says that they also come in other colors, so I am sure you could find black too at some point. They also have them in different points, med,fine, etc. I just thought I would share that while we are on the subject! Christy

RU recently has been growing VID roses obtained from UC Davis. The one they have sold all along performs very well.

I got one from S & W Greenhouse a couple of years ago and it has put out some nice blooms even though I am not sure I have it in the best spot. Nevertheless, it came as a very large plant from them packaged well and has shown no signs of RMV.

I was lucky enough to find a virus free 40 year old Peace bush growing in my neighbors yard that he had planted when they first moved into the house. I sent budwood to Steve Singer at Wisconsin roses and he budded them onto his virus free R.Multiflora rootstock. These "new" old bushes have much better and more fragrant blooms than the modern Peace roses that you find today on the market. I am going to try the same thing again this year. Maybe you would be lucky enough to try something like this yourself if you could find an older clean bush of Peace.

I recommend Ashdown Roses.
I buy exclusively from them and have never been disapointed. The great this is they have a shipping method they call "potless" and it really cuts down on the shipping charges. I just got my shipment of 7 roses in a box that my mailman could place in the package section of a cluster mail box. Potless means the rose is shipped with the root ball in-tact. All seven of mine this year have good strong growth on them and 2 are even in bloom. The ones I recieve last year are growing like crazy with blooms and buds galore.

It's nice that you seem to be enamored with Ashdown, but this person is looking for a place to buy Peace. Ashdown does not carry Peace, and seems to be getting out of the HT rose business altogether.
