Where to find Alaskan Fish Emulsion in gallon size locally?

I used to buy it at Wal-Mart and then they stopped selling it in gallon size and I then found a source at Ace Hardware (but they had to special order it for me), and now that Ace Hardware is called Do-It Center, they no longer carry it or can no longer order it. Is there any known places to buy this in a brick and mortar store or am I stuck having to buy it mail order and spend ridiculous amount on shipping charges?

Yep, agree it is getting harder and harder to find. I found it accidentally about 40 miles from my home this past Saturday, so maybe try local garden centers. I stopped by Lowes to see if they carried it, and they had no idea what fish emulssion was. I had to explain it to the supervisor of their garden Dept. What a joke.

Well, I've got raised beds that total about 200 sq feet. If I were watering using my 1 gallon watering can, I wouldn't be wondering, because I know how much to add to a gallon of water. The problem is that this attaches to the hose, so if I put 10 oz of liquid emulsion in, how do I know it's not applying 4 oz per gallon at the start and 1 oz per gallon at the end? Maybe the lady is right and the attachment really does "take care of it". If that's the case, I do see where you're going. My square footage would calculate out to about 16 oz of fish emulsion. I put that much in the basin, assume the sprayer is making sure the right amount is getting mixed with the water and apply it evenly around my beds until the basin runs clear. Here's a follow-up question: If you all aren't using this hose attachment, how do you apply fish emulsion fertilizer? I suppose filling up my gallon watering can 8 times isn't all that much work. But I wonder what people do when they have twice as much space as I do? I think I'd get carpal tunnel after a while. LOL

Make no mistake. Rotting protien will smell quite bad due to a couple of foul smelling compounds that are the break down products of decaying flesh. Cadaverine is one of them. I forget the name of the other compound. Lucky to remember the name of that one from organic chemistry 30 years ago. If you are using a dead animal you will get this smell unless you cover it with earth or something that will inhibit the exchange of air and gasses. Water won't do it. If you want the nitrogen and other nutrients under your tomatoes then just dig a deep hole and bury the fish or road kill or whatever in the same hole when you are planting the tomato plant. You will not have to smell it and all the breakdown products will be available for the roots of your plant. Just make sure you plant it deep enough that the neighborhood dogs/cats/possums/ coons etc don't come and dig up your tomato plants. Don't work so hard at it. Good luck. The planting Fool

This thread is hilarious and informative at the same time! Thank you all for the laughs and the knowledge! My experience with fish emulsion goes like this. I’ve been growing bonsai for many years and have more than I want to talk about. Some are pretty old and my treasures. When we moved from the big city to the country, we of course brought every single plant and bonsai! We had four box trucks jammed full of plants and one for the house stuff. I carefully arranged each bonsai on their little stands so they’d all look just right even if we were the only ones that could see them. I started the repotting process soon thereafter and of course...used fish emulsion to give them all a boost. The next day, I go back to check on my “babies” and stood there in shock! Thinking the worst about some human vandalism or theft, I notice that each plant had been uprooted and holes had been dug in every pot. Little hand like prints and tracks are all over the place, I follow the trail of destruction to a boggy area near a creek. There lie the remains of several larger bonsai, the fish emulsion bottle and even the bucket! A few choice words later and some tears too, I gathered the survivors and repotted them. Most survived with some very interesting new shapes but I certainly learned my lesson. Fish emulsion is great stuff but never use it if you even suspect that you have raccoons.

So I decided to give away the tomatoe plants I was going to grow in containers to our grandparents. My husband talked me into it since I just started my nursing program on Monday, & of course he's right, it would be hard for me to manage everyone in our garden. So as of now, I have 5 tomatoe plants in the ground. We have a new house and the new thing around here is "no backyard". Our backyard is TINY!! There all doing great so far, we amended the holes with master nursery bumper crop (should have done the whole area as a whole, but will do it next year), I put in 3 celebrity, 1 Brandywine & a better boy. We added tomatoe tone around the tomato plants 4-6 inches around the stem & topped it with earthworm castings & straw bought from tractor supply (10.99 a compressed bale) and left about a 1 inch of empty around the stem. As for my strawberry plant and basil and cilantro which are in containers, I just threw on some earthworm casting and topped with straw. The banana pepper is in a whisky barrel container and I threw 8 stakes in of Jobes organic vegetable slow release fertilizer in the soil (what packaging said). So as for the tomatoe tone - it says add more in 14 days after the first fertilization. What do you guys recommend? We planted the plants on March 28, added the fertilizer and earthworm castings April 1. Should I get any other kind of fertilizer for my tomatoe plants or is the tomatoe tone good enough to last me all season (remember they are all in the ground). What about my strawberry or herbs? Should i just forsure leave them alone or just keep adding worm castings once a month? I think I'm leaving the fish emulsion alone, too confusing for me, unless someone advises me to use some on my plants - do give details lol

I get mine here in St Pete at Neeld-Gordon's on 13 Ave. No., it's an old-fashion Feed Store and he carries Alfalfa pellets, Cottonseed Meal, Black Hen, and other hard to find stuff.... sally

At the Lowe's store in Augusta, ME they only have about a quart or so size, but it is designed to screw onto a hose, and I not use a hose, so I couldn't even use my gift card because there were no directions for mixing by the gallon.

BTW, they didn't even have Rose Tone. They had Holly Tone, which I think I read someplace will work for clems, or maybe it was for roses, or both. But I have to do some research before I try it. I have some rhodies & kalmia that could use it if the roses & clems can't.

The next time I stopped there, I bought a bag of Garden (or was it Flower) Tone. But haven't used that yet & it's still in the car.

But I was out of town in the opposite direction from where I most frequently go today, and stopped in a garden center to look for Clematis. They had a very few plants there yet, mostly still in the greenhouses off on a side road.

But they DID have the Alaska Fish stuff in 8 oz bottles with directions on how much to mix with a gallon of water.
They also had another brand, Neptune's Harvest,that came in 3 formulas, I think. One was with seaweed, one just fish & the other just seaweed. They were about $2 cheaper for the same sized bottle, so I got got that instead for my first attempt at using fish stuff.

And they had Rose Tone in small, medium & large (40# bag). Naturally I got the biggest one.

And they had 50# bags of alfalfa pellets, so this will be another first for me too.

Right mgleason, more and more now it seems things are harder to find as a gardener or anything else really in a retail store be it car parts, or hardware store items etc. Almost seems like a conspiracy.

Called Lowes and Home Depot as it is on their sites but not available in stores and the only way to get free shipping is orders of $249 or more at HD. Lowes doesn't have a way to even order online. I will go there and see if they can order some for the store.
