Tree suckers - what are they & how do we kill them?

We just bought a brownstone, so everything about the 20x45' backyard is new to us. It's dirt & concrete right now, but we have big plans. Here's the issue -- "suckers" have started to shoot up all over the yard, including right under the foundation of the house. I can't figure out how to post a pic, so here's a description:

- Leaves are spade-shaped, green with red veins

- Stem is green with red markings all over

- Impossible to pull out the root, we're assuming that these are all connected to an underground root system.

- Stem is very fibrous -- more tree-like than weed-like.

There is no tree currently in the vicinity that has the same leaves. Our neighbors have the suckers too. Any ideas what these are (they grow fast!) and how to kill them? We're thinking perhaps poplar, given some other comments on this site about their sucker-prone roots. We'd like to take care of them before starting to put in flowerbeds, etc. Many thanks in advance.
