Creating a planting bed around oak trees

I have 2 good-sized oaks near my property line. I think they're pin oaks. They're at least 50' tall, and the canopy starts about 20' high. I'd like to create a large garden bed that includes these two trees and adds at least one other smaller tree (maybe more) + several shrubs + smaller stuff. There's plenty of space to create and extend a planting bed into the yard, which is quite sunny because the oaks' canopies are high and there isn't much else around.

How should I prepare the bed? I'll need to add loam and compost, and dig down to remove some of the many rocks that currently reside in the soil. How close or far from the oaks can I add extra soil? How far from the oaks should I keep from disrupt the existing soil?

Any suggestions for smaller trees that might be happy and attractive in this bed with the oak trees above and behind?

Oaks are among the easier trees to garden near as opposed to things like maples. Oak roots are not nearly as invasive, but sprouting acorns are always a nuisance. All in all, you're probably better off if you keep actual digging to a minimum and add a layer of coarse, highly organic planting medium (leaf mold, aged bark, coarse compost, not loam - too much clay)in the area you want the bed. As long as oxygen is not excluded from the oak roots by compacted clay/loam soil, the existing trees will be fine.

hi

dig hole.. insert plant.. refill with what you dug out..

do not lift the soil level with soil ...

add a nice mulch ...

under large trees.. we dont want to encourage them to grow into planting holes... hence native soil return ...

and we dont want to bury the roots too deeply at any given time... compost applied generally to the bed.. is just feeding a massive tree that doesnt need it.. so just apply a bit around plants ... but that will also encourage the tree to come there ....

frankly.. unless you have some barren soil .. which a soil test will tell ... not much in your garden needs to be repeatedly fed .... and trust me.. feeding plants under trees.. just causes all kinds of tree issues ....

any course mulch would just be pleasant for both the tree and the garden .... and over the years.. will break down as compost...

this isnt a veggie garden... so forget about the tilling and soil amendments .... and fertilizers .... and victory garden .. and all those other tv shows ....

I'm wondering if you might be in the wrong forum for getting input on this. Your question regarding whether you can attract butterflies (I assume) without also attracting larvae to eat your veggies is probably best directed to experienced veggie gardeners, and the rest perhaps to the shrub or perennials forum? But the best solution might just be to wander down to your local nursery and see what they have in stock that will meet your needs. That often drives a person's plant decisions anyway!

After spending some time researching the Scarlet oak, I found that both the male and female flowers are on the same tree. So I guess my question about how to recognize a male Scarlet oak tree is mute. I also found the reminder that Scarlets usually have to be 20 years old before they start fruiting. But keep increasing up to age 50 before they produce there maximum quanity of fruit. all that info could certainly make my friends decision even more difficult for her to make.

Your tree is getting some width growth compared to the last pic. The subject of fall color above has me wanting to mention that I have added a Nyssa Sylvatica to my yard, Black Gum or Tupelo tree. They get great fall color or so I've read. I bought 3 by accident. I have 1 in the ground,1 in a pot and 1 is in a raised bed, and I am going to TRY Bonsai with it. I will transplant the potted one this fall. I am not sure where it will go yet. My yard is getting very crowded, I wish I could give it to somebody. I meant to buy only 1 of them. That Regal Prince will get how wide in maturity? About 15 feet? I forget, sorry. My oaks are doing fine, a few have had Japanese Beetles really eat alot of leaves. Like my Q. Velutina. It has had some issues with what LOOKS like "Butt rot" or a fungus type thing at the trunk bottom. I've been using a fungicide on it, and it seems to have healed the original scar. That is the only REALLY decimated tree (Japanese Beetle infestation) in my yard, and, I am guessing because of the Fungus problem making it weaker than all the other trees in my yard. The rest just had some leaves eaten that didn't harm tree. I need to do an update about that tree (the Q. Velutina) on GW BUT, I can't post pics anymore. I had posted and taken a pic or 2 showing the tree wound. I want to do an update, but, I can't. My computer didn't recognize the disk when I put it in my computer. Anyway, enjoy the rest of summer Dmac, I am waiting for Fall, and it's cooler temps, I can't take this 90"s F crap having. Later.

I believe it was mostly composted material and then topped off with uncomposted wood chips. I am sure I can find a useful place to remove it to since our plans seem never ending. It will be a big project as we will also be transplanting whatever it is they had planted. As far as proximity to the oaks goes, do we need any sort of buffer zone around the trunks where nothing should be planted? Or is leveling out the tree volcanoes enough? I will check out the Botanical Gardens. We are also right down the street from Cantigny and I know they have a number of gardens. And St James Farm and Forest Preserve is right across the street. It might make sense to see what sort of things they are planting since they are in the middle of renewing a huge section of forest. My desire to use native plants also comes from the desire to not need to water as much since the previous owners have the outside spigots hooked up to the treated water. I changed one of them over and added a number of rain barrels, but still would rather have plants growing that will do well with as little help from myself. I noticed yesterday, before the snow storm came this morning, that there is quite a bit of moss growing around and about the front yard. A few different types - I will have to look them up once the snow melts. I think even these alone would be quite beautiful if I can figure out a way to help that spread out and about a little faster.

Thanks for the responses. I'm glad to hear that oaks make such good bed-mates. I will do exactly what mainegrower said--basically add good stuff on top of the current soil, don't compact the soil especially around the oaks, and read more books.

ken--you don't live in the zone 5 where I live! When I pull out a shovel full of dirt, I get 3 shovels full of stones. Yesterday we had a tractor help us dig out an area of the sloping lawn so we could create a 12x12' flat seating area. He pulled out about 2 cubic yards of field stones ranging from 6-15" long--not including the boulder shaped like an egg that was 34" long! I really cannot dig hole.. insert plant.. refill with what you dug out..cuz I haven't met any plants that appreciate a stone diet.

Speaking of maples...I've had good success planting plants in maple root zones at the same time as planting the maple.

Yesterday...saw the darndest thing. 15' Celebration Maple planted 3 years ago. Went digging a shrub hole 10' outside the maples dripline. I pulled a root mass that filled a 5 gallon container after I shook the dirt out.

I'd say its well established, lol.
