If the area the rabbits are in isn't very large they will continue digging to the other side. If you get tired of covering the holes the only solution is bringing the fence 2' below the ground. If you use new material for the underground section you should try using metal mesh with a rubber/plastic coating so it won't rust.

Thank you, susie! I wish I had it last year--I would have sprinkled the many birdhouses I made for our birds. Our neighbor, (who I love) let her house-cat roam all the time and he devastated every spring birdling I had. He was a sweetie but very determined to snack on my birds. Sadly, he did die in their back yard and I hope and pray it wasn't because he ate a vole I had poisoned! I hate poisoing anything but--I have to protect my hosta , if I can! We also have a new dog, and for the most part, she's respecting my plantings--but if she doesn't, I'll be using your recipe!! I wonder if it WOULD work on voles???

Good post, Wallance. My dogs don't dig because I don't want them to. I have three beagles (two of them quite old) and a fenced-in yard. My dogs respect the boundaries we give them, which includes not destroying our property. To help the youngest keep his "promise" we make sure he gets plenty of exercise - just running around in the backyard with the other two is NOT enough - and has toys that he likes. In addition, my dogs are never left unattended outside for more than a few minutes at a time; it is a lot easier to prevent undesirable behavior if you are there to see it coming and express your wishes at the moment they start leaning in a bad direction. I know this is a really old thread, but I've had plenty of experience with "stubborn" dogs (LOL) and exercise and supervision really are the key. There's just no substitute for that.

It has been 26 years since we lost our Snuffy, a Poodle Schnauzer mix. She was a terror in the garden. Cucumbers were her favorite. She would go through the vines till she found just the right one and grab hold and pull till she got it loose. She would then carry off her prize and eat it in the shade of a nearby tree. Of course that meant broken vines etc. She also picked her own green peppers to eat in that shady spot. Snuffy also loved ice cream and knew the location of the 4 places we often indulged in that treat. She knew long before we were in sight of those places and would start whimpering . If we drove on by she would complain bitterly with barks and yelps. 5 years after we moved from Ohio to Michigan, she remembered those places on a visit back to Ohio. Snuff was 7 years old when she was diagnosed with diabetes. We still allowed her to have ice cream now and then. When we could, we avoided driving past the ice cream places she knew. At home in the evening while we were watching tv or reading, we would often hear her soft whimpers as she sat in the kitchen in front of the freezer desperate for her ice cream. Snuffy died at 13 years. Her ashes we still have, stored in an Edys ice cream carton
