Roots rotting - I need help!!

We have had a lot of rain lately in FL and I have a big, red Dessert Rose which I failed to notice a line down its caudex turning soft. I have scraped it out and cleaned off all the soft down to the hard white. At his time, when I took it out of the pot, I have found the root bulb or part of the caudex below the soil line, with dark soft spots. I cut all black spots out of root bulb. It was a lot. Sprayed with fungicide and its hanging in Tool Shed to dry for a couple of days.

My questions, the caudex above ground should be sealed with water proof, wood carpenter glue. Do I also seal the part of the bulb which was covered with dirt? The part that was cut which goes in the dirt.

I've look through past messages but I can't find the post who wrote about something similar.

Treating the above soil level tissue with the glue would be fine, but I would just make sure that all of the rot is remove and do as you are for callusing off.
Treat with a fungicide if you have one.
Pot up when cut ends dry in a slightly moistened gritty mix (not wet) and leave in a shady site for a couple weeks and do not water for atleast 1 wk.
Worked for me, but we all have different situations.

Lunarawolf, the best I can tell you is to get a bark base mix along with some spagnum moss and repot them in the smallest pot they will fit in. Then jst keep them slightly moist NOT WET. They have a few leaves so hopefully they will send out new roots. Phals are really tough and they respond well to being repotted. Just make sure you remove all rotted area also keep them in a little lower light condition until they start recovering. I have a phal which got major root rot, all the leaves got wrinkled, NO ROOTS. I repoted and its now sending out a new leaf. So just repot and watch what happens. Oh you could also soak them in a bit of superthrive before repotting too. Velleta.

If your plants are too big for zip lock bags, I would suggest cutting them down to a smaller size. You only need a crown with 3 to 4 leaves on it. The smaller crown will root quicker and survive easier. Also I do not scrape the stalk. I just cut it off and let it heal for about 30 minutes and plant in vermiculite and cover. I am trying to diagnose a problem with a R. canescens that could be either a water, sun or root issue. Can someone share any sample pictures of these problems? Details: R. canescens was planted in mid-March along with a R. austrinum. Got them small in a East Texas Nursery (1g container) while they were dormant. Austrinum is doing very well but Canescens is not. They are planted close to each other. Canescens leafed out but not that much before losing steam. The soil is mulched 1", feels damp and is raised 15". Leaves are turning an offgreen color. No brown burns on the leaf edges that I associate with sun burn on other plants. Leafs are not curling. Nearby but older camellias and hydrangeas are doing fine. I am aware that "natives" suffer from root rot so I am wondering also if that is what's going. Sample pictures of that and sun burn might help me analyze what's going on. TIA, Luis

It is possible, photos would help us to better diagnose your problem, though. What type of soil do you have? Have you checked the roots to see if they are indeed, rotting? They would be brownish or black, not white. How soggy is the soil down about 12" at the drip line? Are you drip watering your tree, or is the trunk being hit by a sprinkler? This year I have lost 2 ea 10+ yr old DR to root rot... The first was one that the terminal ends of the plant branches started to go soft and rot off. I cut them back numerous times before the actual culprit showed up above the soil line. at that point the terminal ends healed and started growing. In the meantime, the caudex above soil started showing more and more signs of rot even after digging some out. It had progressed further than I had thought. Before scraping the entire plant, I cut the good stems off and planted them. They have done well so far with new growth and no signs of rot after 6 months. Cutting the good off and planting saved the DNA of a plant that had always been a prolific bloomer and was one of my firsts. I hope they continue blooming like the original.

I wouldn seal it until sure is completely gone, there is always a possibility that some fungus survived and sealing it will create the perfect environment for it to multiply
