Raindrops keep falling on their heads (pics)

Far be it from me to complain about five days and 12 inches of blessed rain! And I don't even think the roses are complaining, but they do look different. I now know what the expression "wet tissue paper flowers" means. I thought about taking shots of those but thought better of it, preferring to leave them with their dignity.

Florida roses love rain!

We're supposed to get more rain through the weekend. It's so wonderful!!! The frogs are singing their hearts out. Gee, if I had known this would be the result, I would have laid out the soakers in the back long ago, and we would have washed the vehicles sooner (both done Saturday.)

There are many plusses to this rain. The aquifer is fuller. The air conditioner has gotten a rest. The electric bill will be smaller. The water bill will be smaller. And I can hear the partying down below in the realms of the earthworms. I think the microbes must be livin' it up, too. Ah, blessed moisture...everywhere. And I don't even see an explosion of BS -- yet.

Sherry, if only you could send some of it our way! Your roses actually look quite lovely in the rain and they'll probably put on a big growth spurt now. I'm so glad for you. No matter where it rains, it's always good.

That's nice to hear. A couple of years ago I had some palm fronds that rained down with the monsoon hit 3 plumeria in pots that where at the base of the tree. Luckily, aside from a couple of small branches breaking off, no real damage except for some lost soil. Having pliable stems is a real plus for them. As we all know, this is Arizona--when it rains, it pours. And unfortunately not only raindrops sometimes. GL on getting through the rest of the monsoon season. It has been pretty active so far even though it started late ( there is a joke in there somewhere, but this is not place for it). :-)

Thanks, all, for the kind comments! dorisl - I'm watching those 'Black Cherry' daily, waiting for a ripe one. I've heard they're delicious. tiffy - I second what drippy asks: have you tried growing toms in pots? Is there some particular reason why they don't thrive in your area? Hard to believe they won't grow for you, seeing as how eveything else you grow is so great! I LOVE petunias, but I've gotten away from them in the last few years - too busy falling in love with every other plant on the planet. But I'm really liking these shockwaves; I've grown the regular waves before, but think I like these much better. lisa - Yvonne's Giant Salvia is a tall form of the regular salvia splendens (I think), isolated and shared by a Massachusetts gardener named Yvonne. If you google "Yvonne's Salvia", you'll find a ton of info about it. I originally got my seeds from Emily, a lady with whom Yvonne shared her seeds, and who has subsequently shared them with people from all over. If you do a search here on this forum, you'll find lots of pics - Karen (kqcrna) has some wonderful pics of Yvonne's with the hummers all over them! Keeps your eyes open - there will very likely be offers of seed for trade soon! See those empty balconies in the back of the pics? That's what mine used to look like before I discovered winter sowing back in 2001! Now I can barely walk out there! Folks probably think I'm a little over the top, but I think it's fun! I wanted to post today, but my deck is completely stripped of paint because its being repainted. I dont think the deck is going to end up getting painted until at least Monday because all the rain we got here delayed the whole project a week. I think what I will do is post pics of the plants in my front yard, and then save the backyard for when the deck is painted (probably Tuesday or maybe very very early Wednesday morning (like 5:30 am!). I'll post my Front yard today and the rest as soon as they are back in their spots! -Alex

The retiring of this thread will be a siginificant loss to the culture of the GW Kitchen Forum, in my opinion. It orginated from a community perception of the need to organize and preserve valuable shared knowledge about kitchen renos. Buehl stepped up and organized - and then faithfully maintained the thread over its many incarnations. And all of us watched out for it and threw in the needed bumps to keep it visible on the front page. We often referred newbies to it, confident it would be there for them, as it had been for many of us when we started out. This thread perfectly matched the down-to-earth, problem-solving atmosphere of the KF in a way that having most of the same content parked up in a static thread by the management will not. I will miss it. Though I can imagine Buehl will be glad of having it off her shoulders and out of her care. Thank you (again) Buehl! Liriodendron

Ingrid & Jeri, I wish you one hour of rain every day. Not a drizzle for an hour or a gully-washer for an hour but a good soaking rain for an hour. But you may have to leave SoCal to receive your wish.

You would have to post that pink Gruss first. I love that one. But they just keep getting better.

What a beautiful place you have there! I LOVE the water on the roses, but don't quite understand what balling means as the shot where you mentioned it, the one rose is drooping is can't think of the right word.

Glad you got some relief from the utility bill. It's always welcome. I've not run my central air yet, but my gf near St. Louis has, said she starts turning in on in April sometimes.

Aliska, I could be wrong, but I think I've read a lot about Clotilde Soupert balling (flowers not opening) in wet weather. That's what I was referring to.

We had to turn our air on quite early this year - I think the first week in May, so this is a nice break. And we got lots of rain yesterday and some today, too. Yay!!

Randy, he's usually taller than that. :))

Thanks for the explanation about balling. I thought it had something to do with what the blossom did after it bloomed. So now I know what that's about.

I know what you mean..we haven't had 5 days straight without rain here in Ky...ELVIS would love it!!

Your garden is lovely...and the pictures are excellent. I always love to see other's roses...there's universal love in that!! Enjoy..as the saying here goes...It's gonna get hotter than a filly at the Derby!! Hee

My yard looks about the same. We've been having rain all weekend. The lawn looks great! DH is happy. Many of my roses are putting on a nice growth spurt. Mlle Kruger has doubled in size, about time too. I have thrips, but they don't seem to be doing as much damage, maybe because the roses are so well hydrated?????
