rain and trees are falling on my head...

i've been complaining about it not raining in my neighborhood. thursday was our first nice rain with 0.7" falling. today 2" came down. unfortunately, rain wasn't the only thing that came down...

i often wondered what it would be like if an olive branch fell down on the plumeria. well, FCOL there is no need to wonder anymore. an 8' branch came down today. it's not a pretty sight. only one mature plumeria was ripped to shreds. i can see shattered bodies of seedlings underneath all the branches. and to think they were just moved there on saturday. sheesh!

lightning is flashing like crazy now and it's raining all around us. i'm not exaggerating when i say this, but so many bolts are going off at the same time that it looks almost like daylight at times. gave up efforts to cut away branches and get at the plumeria carnage.

Oh D- sorry about the carnage! Hope that the shredded plumie can be saved as cuttings, to propagate into more plants. From something so bad to something good! May the seedlings also survive and grow to lovely plumie trees!

For the record I am someone who is walking down the sidewalk of my backyard and was impacted on the right shoulder by a falling squirrel. The squirrel was fine ran right back up the tree after looking at each other in confusion for a split second. Called my wife while she was at work to let her know what had happened she laughed so hard that her coworkers left too..

Well, we did head up to the Nantahala Saturday morning bright and early; was supposed to head out early last Thursday but it was raining big time everywhere in the state and not that much better the next day, Friday. But the weather guru on the net was showing western North Carolina was clearing so we hitched up and was gone down the road in the rain. Half way there the rain had quit and the sun was breaking through; reaching the campground by late afternoon it was warm and sunny. Had the popup set-up by 6:00pm and I was in the river wetting a line at 6:05! We had brought some already made beef stew and enjoyed a late evening 7:30pm supper by fireside. Weather could not have been better. Fishing was lousy in that there had been a lot of hard rain and it always seems things have to settle out before the fishing gets serious once again. My experience has always been just before and in the early part of a rain are the best fishing times. Inspite of the poor fishing we had brought our bikes and really enjoyed riding around the area. Had to be back today for an important appointment and so we had to leave when we did; I guess you got to take what time you can get and be greatful for it, but it seems to me on these outings I like at least -5- (FIVE) days campside ... that does not include travel time ... need another day for coming and another day for going! But, like I said, weather was perfect and really enjoyed the relaxed camp time; and we also had a good campfire every night which always adds to the stay. And one other thing - my little camper has the most comfortable sleeping bunks, sleep better in them than I do my own bed at home! So I'd have to add that I really enjoyed some very good, sound sleep! Dale

Different areas have different recipes for building compost. I have also seen where some Brits will put all their leaf litter in a bag to build leaf mold and they will dump nothing but greens into the compost bin. I believe this might have to do with their very short summers, so they want to burn through the compost as quickly as possible. But I have seen some take a more balanced approach. Kew definitely doesn't seem to discriminate between green and brown and will throw both into their massive mounds. It is from the Aussies that I picked up on the 'Diversity is the key' bit, but even from them... even from the SAME GARDENER I have heard fluctuating estimates on how much green and how much brown to use. Through it all there are two things I have picked up. First is: Compost. Just do it. And second is: If it can be composted, put it in the pile. If you start to see a negative affect, whether wet and smelly (too much green) or dry and slow (too much brown), add the material needed to get it back on track.

I don't believe anything except heavy construction is going to outright kill those trees. They're tough! Lose some roots? No problem, we'll make more! As to the suggestion to topdress with compost and aerify, that will be good for the turf but of little impact to drainage or for that matter, tree health. @ viper....I disagree. Rain gardens, such as I understand them anyway, do most of their work via the soil layers. The main function is infiltration and that has relatively little to do with the plant material which may be on site. Further-and this is new information-it seems that melt water which constantly enters the device at a slow rate even in winter is sufficient to defrost the soils in many raingardens. I suppose I may as well toss in the caveat that this was from research out of Ohio. I'm sure nobody in Ohio thinks they're living in a warm spot, but contrast that with a place like Wisconsin, where it's even colder in the winter.....and you can see there's still room for question. But so far as my understanding goes right now, raingardens can and often do work in the winter as well. Now for some balance: Raingarden proponents like to tout the "deep roots" of the prairie species used for these practices. But..........(there's always a "but"), this has far more to do with soil characteristics than it does with anything to do with a given plant species' rooting characteristics. That's the dirty little secret that all these prairie warriors either won't say or don't know. They parade around as if another patch of ironweed ( a cool plant) is going to save the world. As far as I can tell, it's what has happened to the soil, and especially the subsoil, that is going to influence rooting depth. Not species of plant. All that said, a properly designed rain garden or bioswale can be a wonderful thing. I think it's important that aesthetics be considered. Nobody's going to fall inline with a technique-no matter how useful-if it doesn't look interesting.

I feel your pain Derrick. Hopefully what has been damaged can be salvaged, as BL mentioned and make many cuttings :)

I've been cringing with each storm as it gracefully blows off another shingle or two of my roof. It is old and needs replaced, but need it to hold out a little longer. Spent all morning Saturday up there repairing the damage that had occurred, and cementing down shingles that were loose. That should help alot. FOrtunately there has been no leaking. :)

thanks for checking in on me.

i removed enough twigs and branches to pull out the seedlings. i guess it looked much worse at night. it helps that the stems are pliable. perhaps, the stems will straighten on their own.

i'm glad that it wasn't the house that was damaged. anything else in the yard can go, save the house. LOL then again, just keep a cool head no matter what happens. at least we're still alive to live another day, right!

better chances of rain today and tomorrow. what fun! it's a nice 78% san diego morning with fog in the foothills.

That's nice to hear.

A couple of years ago I had some palm fronds that rained down with the monsoon hit 3 plumeria in pots that where at the base of the tree. Luckily, aside from a couple of small branches breaking off, no real damage except for some lost soil. Having pliable stems is a real plus for them.

As we all know, this is Arizona--when it rains, it pours. And unfortunately not only raindrops sometimes. GL on getting through the rest of the monsoon season. It has been pretty active so far even though it started late ( there is a joke in there somewhere, but this is not place for it).

To have any plant that you like damaged by a storm is bad enough. Having some of your prized plants ripped to shreds can make your stomach churn. Sorry about that. We're always in need of the rain, but not the wind that tends to come with it.
