Austin recommendations for hot dry climates (Ingrid requested)

Hi Ingrid and others living in hot, dry climates.

Here a list from this year's Austin catalog that I received in the mail. These are specified as doing well in your climate:

Abraham Darby, Ambridge Rose, Carding Mill, Charlotte, Darcey Bussell, Evelyn, Huntington Rose, Jude the Obscure, L.D. Braithwaite, Lady of Megginch, Lady Emma Hamilton, Mary Rose, Molineaux, Scepter'd Isle, Snow Goode, Sophy's Rose, Tamora, The Alnwick Rose, The Dark Lady, William Shakespeare 2000, Winchester Cathedral

The catalog also lists roses for hot humid areas. Maybe these lists are also on his website.

Ambridge Rose, in my conditions set whole new standards for both rust and chlorosis.
So did Tamora, tho I admit, it was less spectacular than Amgridge.

Thank you so much Diane. I can't speak about many of these roses but I had Ambridge Rose years ago and within weeks it was totally covered in rust, the only rose in my garden at that time to have rust. Abraham Darby withers in the sun and now that I have it in the shade also has rust. Carding Mill is excellent for a hot dry climate so that one is certainly correct. Interestingly, when I visited the Austin rose garden at the Barona Casino last August, the only rose that was blooming well from David Austin's list on a blistering hot day was Sophy's Rose. Some blooming well there were Miss Alice, Anne Boleyn, Charles Darwin, Lilian Austin, Mary Magdalene and The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild. It does make me wonder how Mr. Austin acquired his data. Since their American branch is in Texas I would think that would be a good source of information on dry-heat tolerant roses. It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has grown the roses listed by Diane in the heat.

Thanks so much, Kippy. I look forward to checking these out this weekend. But I'm not so much looking for pink, as apricot, preferably with somewhat flexible stems. Diane and ingrid, Austin touts Evelyn as a 6' climber, and my memory is that several Californians on this forum have claimed 20' long Evelyns. Ingrid, I always check out the photos on HMF, but I never trust that as much as a person-to-person opinion here. Is there an apricotish version of SdlM, or Duchesse de Brabant, or the Tantau rose you just linked on the Austin thread? Also, seeds of the somniferous poppies can be purchased at One Stop Poppy Shoppe and several other smaller seed companies. Burpee has a double peony type called Venus. These poppies are supposed to be out of their element in our climate, but I planted last autumn to take advantage of the cold, and so far all but the darkest color are holding their own and stopping visitors in their tracks. -jannike

Ingrid: I'll be anxious to hear how your Wild Edric do. Yucaipa is just a bit east of us, and Beaumont is about 30 miles east. Most of the orange groves are gone; it's such a shame. When they started ripping them out in Orange County, I started planting small ones there. Not so popular then, but I love the fragrance and feel of an orchard, and of course, the fruit. The whole time I've lived in this area, they've been ripping out orange groves. I have a small citrus orchard in the Garden of Forgotten Dreams, and I'm so glad. It's like saving a tiny scrap of our heritage. And the fragrance of orange blossoms and roses -- heavenly! Speaking of fruit, does anyone like poison Apples??? (below)

I might ask Burling for recommendations and also check the old posts by Cori Ann. She grew MANY climbers and documented which ones did best in full sun, etc. Here is her HMF so you can look up those she grows. https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=3.24840 Falstaff did particularly well along with Florentina. She also grows many as climbers such as First Crush.

Well, I really don't want to get into all the details of kw/hours. Why? Because I know very little about it! I just pay the bills! But here's an article about the high cost SDGE charges for their "tiers". This story says rates go to 48cents/kwh. I'm not going to research it. But I can vouch that with this many people living in one home, that cutting usage down to baseline (even before we had the pool) was never achieved, even without AC, and by the way, we are more coastal than the people in this story. . https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/energy-green/sd-fi-sdge-highbills-20180913-story.html In defense of the poster who mentioned Californians feel "guilty" about the non-greenness of using AC, yes I know a few people who say stuff like that. Sometimes on Nextdoor people say things like that. We put in solar a couple years ago, so have some relief from high bills, but our solar doesn't cover the whole electricty bill. We have a home with 7 people living in it. Also a large pool and the pool filter takes a lot of juice. Edited to add: in fact, the mayor of Los Angeles (not where I live) has famously said that he feels guilty running his air conditioner, a sound bite that is replayed over and over again on a certain local radio station. So there are plenty of folks who feel it's not green to run AC. (I wouldn't feel guilty, but then again, I haven't researched the environmental effects-- and I don't have AC).

Sophy's Rose, from what I've seen of it does well in Huntington gardens, but I can't speak for how close that is in climate or how it does "all the time" Anne Boleyn, Charles Darwin, Jude the Obscure, Mary Rose, Tamora, The Dark Lady, WS 2000, and some others looked nice, too. Ingrid, have you tried any of Paul Barden's roses? Just curious, I was thinking about trying some since they're supposed to be good for hot climates (if I do, I'll let you know)

From my experience here in Orange County California,

I am not capable of growing Abraham Darby - rust and won't get above 2', Carding Mill looks good so far...but I just got it last month, Evelyn died for me when I got puny year old plants on a 70% off sale...I am trying her again from RU, and so far it looks good, Jude the Obscure is interesting...at first he pouted and I lost a couple bushes....but after 5 years he's turned around and is growing beautifully, The Dark Lady mildews a little here, but is overall good, William Shakespeare 2000 is like the Dark Lady, Molineux just went in this April, and is growing....too early to tell. My friend Hoovb has beautiful Molineux plants...but her roses are in a different microclime from here. All the rest I do not grow.
