Yes, this tree species has surprised me with growth too. It is actually the fastest grower on the property, something I never expected. I always heard it was a very slow species, and usually it is but it has the potential to grow much faster. I suppose that's true with alot of plants, though.

Do be sure to scatter a little Irish Spring around those fine fortifications for good measure.

Wow Sherry that looks great! Mine are just now starting to leaf out, maybe they will grow 1ft like yours. I have one planted in front of my house, maybe a little too close but they're supposed to be strong trees. I had a few growing in pots too but I gave them to a friend of mine who doesn't have any trees in his yard.

Off topic, but my Pignut Hickory has put on over 2ft of growth in the last few weeks. Who says they're slow growing?

Your hickory is growing great, Alabama, but the bur oak is a little small - maybe it'll pick up later. I'm real pleased with the progress my bur oak has made in a short time, but my mockernut hickories are pitiful!

Wow! Your oaks and hickories look great folks. When you say a couple years old Pignut...is that exactly 2? I have some Shagbark seedlings going on 3 years and they are about 4 inches tall. I hope this year is the first they really start rocketing up. The first year the rabbits got their teeth on them, but I learned my lesson!

Our mockernuts are all growing great. One is pushing about 5 feet in 3 years. These should all be opening in the next week. Hopefully just after the cold snap tonight!

I think I planted that hickory two years ago, and it was 1ft tall when I planted it. It had only grown about 1ft over the two years since it was planted, but for some reason this year it has really taken off. Every bit of that in the picture is new growth. I did put some composted horse manure around it, so maybe that helped.

Sherry, the Bur oak has only started leafing out this past week, hopefully once this cold snap gets out of here it'll kick in high gear. ; )

Bur oaks have consistently been the fastest growing trees I've planted here over the past 15 years(OK, with the exception of Illinois Everbearing mulberry). Consistently put on 2+ ft of growth every year, often with 2 or 3 flushes of growth in mid to late summer. Kinda puts that ol' "Oaks are slow-growers" saw to rest, huh?

Are those seedlings of the AU-CVM #1 acorns I sent a year or two back? Largest acorn I've come across yet, from a bur oak.

I don't remember where Alabama got those acorns, but they were enormous, Lucky - I planted the three of them in the fall of 2007.
The vigorous survivor is making its second flush, and it's nearly to the top of the cage - it reminds me a lot of overcup oak, only with much bigger leaves and acorns, and much faster growing.
