Another question about my Bur Oak

Well, it looks like my newly planted Bur Oak has died. I thought maybe I didn't water it enough, but my builder planted 5 other trees all at the same time and all of those trees look great. I have watered all of them the same. My question is about the roots on the bur oak. I noticed when it was planted that there were exposed roots at the base of the trunk. I also noticed that the exposed roots were growing in circles around and around the trunk. Is this normal? Should the tree have been planted deeper? There weren't a lot of exposed roots, but our other trees didn't have any roots showing. Could that be why the tree died? All of the trees are guaranteed for a year, so I will be having the bur oak replaced, but I need to know if I need to watch out for the roots being exposed or not. Thanks!
