do old hybrid teas easily crisp in heat?

Hey folks,

sorry for all the questions! I hope you aren't tired of me yet. *__*

I'm learning a lot though, so thank you for helping me out so much.

so I've been doing alot of trapsing through gardens lately... looking for roses that might be good choices for me.

and it's been kinda hot (85 today, 76 this past weekend)

Both the old hybrid teas / teas at Huntington Gardens and Descanso Gardens looked pretty not-happy. some buds were brown,... they looked kinda crisped. Things like Maman Cochet and Souvenir de Pierre Notting, for example. They just didn't look very happy. All the ones in Descanso's older tea section.

Is this normal for this class of rose? If it is, I figure I should probably avoid them. But I know some folks had said they had good luck in hot areas with these types, so I thought I'd get more information.

The bourbons, noisettes, hybrid musks, hybrid wichurana, david austins, modern hybrid teas and hybrid perpetuals looked a lot happier.

I've not seen that problem with the Cochets. In my garden, East Wind periods are when they open best.

The darker things -- Austin's 'The Prince,' and 'Eugene de Beauharnais,' even "Benny Lopez" and "Old Town Novato" crisped in our recent terrible windstorms. Even some of the yellow roses dried up. Pretty sad.

Reine Des Violettes looked a little crispy,... but several other Hybrid Perpetuals looked absolutely gorgeous...! For example: Baronne Prevost and Marchessa Boccella looked totally lovely and happy.

Thanks, Jeri. I'd ordered cl. Maman Cochet, and I guess at this point the best thing for me to do is just give her a shot and see how she does.

Finally back to this thread I started eight years ago. Olde Romeo looks awesome, and also unavailable in the US. I have missed you all and gardening. Last year I was on assignment in San Diego, a temporary arrangement that ended on October 30th. Back at the abbey now, and for any of you who remember me, I wanted to tell you that we are moving into the new place starting on January 11-16...the end of a long journey, and the beginning of a new one. Will there be roses at the new place? Yes. Ambrose and the seminarians transplanted over 100 of the current abbey collection to the new place. I was in San Diego, and I have no idea how they transplanted some of those roses. There was a tea (Rosette Delizy) that was about 10x10 that they basically made a bare root!! It's sprouting tons of shoots at the new location. I am constantly amazed at how tough roses are. When the new garden grows in, I'll post photos for you all. Jerome

I agree with Michael. If you start with grafted bareroots and you plant the bud union deep (you should do that in a cold zone anyway), most of the roses will grow own root but you have the advantage to start with stronger plants. Double Delight will grow own root quite soon. And, if one of the roses won't go own root what do you loose in case you plant the bud union deep enough in case the rose is hardy in your area? Try to get quality bareroots from vendors who sell virus free plants - this is particularly important in case of Peace that is infamous of being sold virused in the US market. If a plant is virused it will have more difficulty to go through a though winter - this is true even in my "balmy" zone 8. For this reason I would not buy Peace in a garden center because they will have Peace (and all the roses) grafted on Dr. Huey.

I always enjoy your beautiful rose pictures, Dan! When I started growing roses again in 2013, after about a six year break we were going through a drought which ended in 2017. In 2013 I planted a lot of roses, with Peace being one of them. For awhile I was feeling pretty smug about my two Peace bushes, because almost everyone complains about it being a blackspot magnet, which it is, unless you live in a more arid climate. Between 2013 and 2015 it did so good for me, with not much blackspot at all, it was fairly vigorous and produced quite a few really nice blooms for three seasons, that’s all changed, blackspot has returned, I won’t give up on growing it though, like it too much. Both Sheer Bliss and Stainless Steel are really good suggestions! SS is probably the closest match that I’ve seen. I had thought about it, but I guess I hadn’t looked closely enough at it. After examining photos on DG and HMF, there are some shots of SS that look just like my rose. Others give me a good bit of hesitation, though. Are the ruffle petals that I see in some pics of SS indicative of the variety? Mine usually does not exhibit ruffles like that. The fat, greenish buds with the sepals turned down are a dead ringer. Some photos also show a fair amount of luminous pink on the edges. Maybe mine just doesn’t turn “Lavender” as often, fr whatever reason. I can’t say that I would have ever classed mine as one of the lavender/mauve roses until this spring.

If it were July or August I would be able to help you out.
Till then, the only ones in my garden that I remember that crisp are Francois Dubruil and Pat Austin. I'll grow both anyway, because the fragrance is so delightful.
