does anyone grow 'niles cochet' ???

i am confused as to the size of this plant when it is mature. help me find has one pic in particular where that bush looks to be easily 8' x8'...on the other hand, ashdowns description says it will be 3'-5'...could this be due to **my** confusion about 'red maman cochet' ?? help me find says it's a synonym for the same rose..but could that explain the size discepancy?? thank you, donna

Niles Cochet = Red Maman Cochet.
This is a sport of Maman Cochet, isolated in Niles, CA (near present day Fremont).
In CALIFORNIA, with a long growing season, this rose (and all of the Cochets) can easily reach 10-12 feet. Here is a photo of an old Niles Cochet, in San Juan Bautista, CA.:

This plant was somewhere between 10 and 12 feet tall in this photo. Its size varies annually with the amount of pruning it receives. (Less is better, with Teas.)

In New York, with a shorter growing season and a colder winter, I believe Tea Roses do not reach the proportions we commonly see out here. That's probably the source of the confusion.

I love the fact that whenever someone mentions Niles, Jeri whips out that picture in an eyeblink! It's my favorite photo of him. :)

Anne, No need to apologize...you didn't know! :0) This is what Palatine said of Laguna and Rosanna: Laguna is the most fragrant climber in our line up. The hot pink old fashion quartet bloom is very stunning. However, you must know that it grows very vigorous and almost like a rambler it will need to be tied up regularly (the exact words of my father Â it is all over the place). Another rose you may consider is Rosanna. We feel that it is stunning and showy. It has a globular pink bloom. It is more civilized and 10 ft tall. Rosanna has the highest tolerance to both mildew and black spot. Laguna is slightly more susceptible to mildew. Both will be OK for your Zone. Thanks a bunch! :0) Phyl

Niles, Maman, and White Maman Cochet will just about always ball in cool, foggy weather, in my coastal Ventura County hillside garden. I grow Niles. When our springs are "normal," (as this one has been) they are cool, humid, with fog thick and wet enough to show up on the windshields of cars. Then, Niles balls. Or, at least, he doesn't open fully. Most of the time, the blooms are still lovely, so I don't really mind. The Cochets are not alone in this. I have never seen a bloom of Souv. de la Malmaison open here. They ball, rot, and turn to brown slime. Arcadia Louisiana Tea balls here in the spring, and opens gloroiously in the Fall. Most of the heavily-petalled modern Exhibition HTs do the same thing here. Jeri

bart - to answer your question about my Niles Cochet (which I believe is a color sport of MC), what I meant by "a little balling in the Spring" (sorry I was not more clear) was that, if our Spring (which here is Feb - May) is damp or drizzly for several days, or rainy, NC does ball. However, mostly our Springs are very clear and dry after March, so she does not ball then. So, it all depends on the weather. When she does ball, I usually just cut off the offending blooms, and then when the weather clears up she puts out more flowers. She repeats a lot during our hot dry summers, and then there is no problem with balling. The Fall flush is also usually fine. In case the info is of any use, my plant of NC is a rooted cutting off a bush growing a block away from my house which is in the neglected old garden of a cottage which is over 100 years old, and was owned by the same family for 90+ years. The old garden is full of old roses - I noticed banksia lutea, Belle Portugaise, some sort of china, and of course Cecile Brunner, in addition to the very large mature bush of NC. About 15 years ago the very elderly man of the original family, who still owned the cottage, knocked on my front door wanting to know if my FIL still lived there - he used to play with him when they were children around 1920! Well, it is my favorite photo of him, too, because it really shows what he can do. Actually, it really shows what Tea Roses in general can do.
Every time we use that photo in a talk, someone wants to know where it is, so they can get cuttings. I have to remind 'em that the rose is on private property, and I'm fairly sure the owner has a shotgun.

Well, isn't that owner a stingy little bugger!!! LOL

I have a Niles Crochet that might be 6 inches high. I have stuggled to keep it alive and by jove...I think he is beginning to grow. I also love how Jeri whips that baby out....I never get tired of looking at what my niles may become one day!!!

Deb, I've got a little White Maman Cochet. We brought it home from the Sacramento Cemetery sale because it was just too small and "iffy" to sell. I think it was about 1.5 inches tall. But it's starting to grow, and I figure if I'm lucky and live long enough I'll have a nice White Maman Cochet -- tho likely not anything like the 10-footer across the street from the softball field in SJB.

thank you all so much...i was having a hard time deciding where to plant it..i guess i'll give it a home in my rose bed, and years down the road, if it gets too large.., i'll move it's neighbors!!thanks again..donna

Donna - I assume you are in a warmer microclimate than your "z5" indicates: Niles is a z6 rose at best - I'm borderline 6b/7a and mine died to the ground this past winter. Never gonna be that big here.
