Niles Cochet - all blooms balled

I have a Niles Cochet in a very large pot. It is about 2 years old, and just produced a full flush of the most gorgeous, round, fat buds. Unfortunately, 100% of them balled - I pried some open, but that damages them and they get ugly brown on them. Does anyone have an opinion - is this just because of our unusually cool Spring, or does this rose always do this in No CAl? We are in zone 9, but we are only 4 blocks from SF Bay, although far from the ocean.

Niles, Maman, and White Maman Cochet will just about always ball in cool, foggy weather, in my coastal Ventura County hillside garden.

I grow Niles.
When our springs are "normal," (as this one has been) they are cool, humid, with fog thick and wet enough to show up on the windshields of cars. Then, Niles balls. Or, at least, he doesn't open fully.

Most of the time, the blooms are still lovely, so I don't really mind.

The Cochets are not alone in this.

I have never seen a bloom of Souv. de la Malmaison open here. They ball, rot, and turn to brown slime.
Arcadia Louisiana Tea balls here in the spring, and opens gloroiously in the Fall.
Most of the heavily-petalled modern Exhibition HTs do the same thing here.

It is a matter of zone, isn't it? I have 7 Souvenir de la Malmaisons, and they seldom ball. Marie Van Houtte, however, often balls. so many others do too.

I am having a problem with my Maman Cochet. I hope she begins to produce more, or she is gone.

Niles is coming along nicely, Jerome. I love Salvia leucantha! We can't seem to give it both perfect drainage and enough freeze protection during our winter rains to keep it alive. I've moved on, sadly. It's basically an annual in my Winde Country garden, altho it lives in Mill Valley. Anyone else love Salvia nemerosa 'East Friesland'? That, Agastache and Phygelius are my best garden perennials.

There are several very old bushes of Maman Cochet in our neighborhood, surviving in the unkempt yards of old houses. I dug one out of a hedge (only the tip of one cane showing) at the house of some friends of mine, and convinced them to cut back/dig up that end of the hedge. After about 2 years, MC had grown 3 feet wide and 7 feet high, and was covered in gorgeous blooms. My friends were astonished, but I was not - the old roses which have survived decades of no care (and even survived being eaten by hedges!) are VERY hardy (as in tough, not as in temperature). I have a Niles Cochet (another color sport of Maman Cochet) which I got in the neglected (but full of old roses) back yard of a small cottage in our neighborhood. The elderly man who lived there and owned it knocked on our front door with his daughter one day about 20 years ago, and asked for "Lor". That was my FIL's name, and we now live in the house he grew up in. At that point he had been dead for several years. I invited the man in, and he told me that he had moved back into his childhood home (the cottage down the block from our house), and that he had been a childhood friend of my FIL, about 80 years before he knocked on our door! Anyway, he invited me to come look at the roses, and take cuttings of anything I wanted. Here is a bloom of 'Niles Cochet' I got from the bush I have that I rooted from a cutting from a very old bush growing behind that cottage. The Cochet family of roses obviously likes our neighborhood.

Well, in the Gulf Coast I'm not, but is the Space Coast okay? :) Maman Cochet has been in my garden for a year and a half, ownroots from Chamblees. It's done very well. The flowers are breathtaking, I love the form and how it just keeps unfurling! It will ball some when it rains, but not enough to bother me. I spray my garden for blackspot so my specimen is clean, but I have the feeling it's probably a lot more resistant than many modern HTs. Fragrance--I don't smell tea-scent very well, so to me it's scentless. Still, the color and form make it a keeper. I hope this helped... Elaine

I'm still getting (rare) tiny blooms.. Yes it is hot, the rose is in a black plastic 4g pot on hardscape and still quite young (though budded) but.. I'm starting to question its id although I have not had a mislabeled (vs misidentified) rose from Beales yet. It looks more like a China than a Tea to me.. sort of.. The buds appear and open up in no time resulting in tiny messy blooms. I have pinched off the current crop of buds but will post pics of the next ones here in an effort to verify its id.

I don't think it's zone, as much as it is temperature and humidity.
Though SoCal is warm and dry inland, the coastal strip is often cool and humid, and those large numbers of thin petals don't like that.

Funny thing -- The Stagecoach Inn is maybe 10 mi inland from us, and Niles has no problems opening there.

My Niles is in the best spot in the garden and it still has a balling problem sometimes. The blooms are perfect when they do open though.
