Newbie here, clay soil, compost, etc

Just recently bought my first home 6 months ago. the previous owners covered all areas (except lawn) with black weed resistant tarp and 3 inches of white river rocks. removed the rocks and tarps to find wild onion weeds everywhere, roundup didnt work so sat outside one day for hours and dug up as many as i could. they are still throughout the yard.

After doing some research i realize i have clay soil, so far i have removed the tarp and rocks, pulled the onions.

the area i am working on is 47 feet long by 3 feet wide, purchased 4 bags of scotts manure and raked it into the clay, only 2 inches deep if that.

any suggestions on what i should do to amend the clay in the mean time, also cheaply since i dont want to spend an arm and a leg.

would like to start a compost bin soon.

also considering mixing browns and greens throughout the soil however low on browns.

Any plants to consider/also some to stay away from. all and any advice is greatly appreciated.
