Swap snowblower motor?

I picked up a free snowblower today. Toro 824. It has a hole blown in the block. I am wondering how I can swap a new or rebuilt motor in this snowblower?

I really don't want to replace the block and deal with the rod that broke or the piston issue, valves and stuff. Does anybody know of a web site that can tell me what the shaft size is on this engine? I would rather put a B&S engine in this chassi anyway, but I need to find out the shaft size to match it up.

The Toro web site does not state what the shaft size is for the Tecumseh engine, all I have is the engine model # HM80-155291P.

Any help would be great, boy if only need to stick a $200 referb engine or a brand new snow king 5hp motor in this chassi that would be great.

I have a old 1 stage mtd, and I wouldn't mind putting some money into the chassi of this 2 stage toro to get a decent blower out of it and retire the 1 stage to someone else. It looks like eveything else on the 2 stager looks in working order, just the bad motor.

I think this is a 1993 year snowblower, cuz of the ser. #. That would be a 16 year old blower, kind of did its life, but could get a new heart....

It should be 1", remove the pulley to check it. It has to come off anyway. That is a very good machine and if in good shape worth re powering. Tecumseh engines are no longer being built so B&S would be the way to go. You may need to shim it, the crank center line on the new OHV engines are about 1/8" lower than the old L-heads.

The 38080 was a very capable thrower. It wouldn't throw snow as far as the throwers with the more square chutes, but was a hard one to clog. No shear pins cause of the drum auger. They used to have 5 HP (small and med frame)or a 7 HP on the same chassis, but the performance was on the 8. Does harbor freight offer a Chonda? Anyways, a fun project none the less. The serial of the thrower shows it to be a 1990. If the spring loaded scraper isn't worn far back, it has lots of usage left. I would think the engine to be a 1" shaft, but that is what a caliper / ruler is for. Maybe a shorty is available.

Today, I revived an old 24" Ariens dump find. Some revival, I drained the tank refilled with fresh gas laced with carb cleaner, gave it a shot of starting fluid and pulled the string. It caught on the 2nd pull. Everything works fine. I ran it into the shed after fogging the engine with Mystery Oil.

The compression was 100#. I was going to give up on Thursday, take a loss, and give it back. The large-gap spark tester would produce sometimes a spark every revolution, and then would skip some, and then every rev. I decided to go over the ignition with a fine tooth comb. Removed the head and installed a dial gauge. The points should open at .89MM btdc. Used some flexstone on the points and gapped at .020 Brought the piston around and the points opened about .070 btdc, close enough. I adjusted them to .89 btdc. With the coil tester, I checked the coil (under the flywheel) and condensor. Put everything back together and it started. Maybe the water (3" ice storm) made corrosion on the points ?? I didn't find the problem. It sparks more consistently now.

Chuck104, you might want to try some PB Blaster penetrating oil. I was also reading recently that some people are making a good penetrating oil out of a 50/50 mix of acetone (such as nail polish remover) and automatic transmission fluid. That could also be worth a shot. Let them soak in for a while, and try again? If you have access to something like a 3-jaw gear puller, or something else that will let you try to crank it off by turning a screw, that could also help out. I'm assuming you were able to remove the bearing & shaft from the auger housing. If not, then disregard the gear puller comment. If it came to that, you could also try heating the bearing, while trying to avoid adding heat to the shaft. The bearing might expand away from the shaft by enough to help get it off. But the heat would cook the grease in the bearing, and maybe destroy it. So I'd use that as a last resort, since you may really be committed to replacing the bearing if you try heating it. Again, if it is out of the machine, and the bearing is exposed, you could also cut it with something like an angle grinder (either one slice through it, or cut it in half), and get it off that way. baymee, that's a great writeup! I have a 1993 MTD. And mine, despite being stored indoors, has noticeably more rust than yours, so kudos! When I bought mine in ~'02, the impeller would turn, but the augers wouldn't. Both shear pins were intact. Drove out the shear pins (both of them were bent, but had not broken), and opened the auger gearbox. In my case, the gears were all fine (fortunately), it had just sheared off the woodruff key that prevents the brass gear from spinning on the auger shaft. About $.70 later I was back in business. I always thought that was very lucky, but I never appreciated quite how lucky until reading this. Why mine simply sheared the key, and yours shattered the gears, I have no idea. A single cylinder 3-4-5 or more horse-power engine is always being sought by somebody. Depending on wether it is the vertical or horizontal crank-shaft, will be how he should sell it. My son has a log-splitter that uses a 4 hp engine. I took it off a lawn tool, and it works well. As for the snow-blower part, it might be used to blow sand out of the garage. A better use for it would be something to be converted to war usage, minus the engine! My Grand-father had a very old Fordson farm tractor sitting behind the barn. One time i went to visit, and asked what happened to the old tractor. He said that the Air Force had dropped it on Japan in WW II! Go figure!

I will look into a B&S engine for this chassi, any iders for hp needed? 10hp? Not sure what the engines have today compared to 1990? I would think that the engines of today would be better torque/rpm's? I am wondering if a 5hp B&S would be ok to stick on this chassi?

No shear pins, is that what kills these motors, hitting rocks and bigger objects locks up the engine, breaks teh rod blows hole in block?

A 5 HP will work if that is what you've got. Expect the heavy snow to not go very far. The drum auger uses grade 5 bolts rather than shear bolts. Grab a frozen newspaper, and the engine will want to snub, then a smoking smell from the belt- but won't cause it to toss a rod necessarily. Tecumsehs are prone to tossing rods. Having enough oil in them is mandatory or they start to exhange metal in the journal and bye- buy.

Just to be smart, I looked at HF You can get a 6.5 HP Chonda for 129 or an 11 HP w/ 12v start for 299. Probably deal with the Air filter/ box issue. I have never bought these. Are they similar in quality and serviceability as what is on the new throwers? Would be neat to see someone try it out. You could be the test person and report back. . .
