Teas for Mostly Sunny but not Full Sun

Are there any shade tolerant teas? By shade tolerant, I mean 4-5 hours of full sun.

We grow Mme Joseph Schwartz in the Sacramento cemetery under a tree in two different locations, and it blooms and grows well. Of course, your conditions will be different, but it's worth a try. I heard Charles Quest-Ritson say that he thought this was a superior plant to Duchesse de Brabant, and that's been my experience, too - much less mildew, more vigorous plant, same beautifully shaped flowers and luscious tea scent.

Don't teas in hardiness zone 6 require an awful lot of babying?

Is your neighbor OK with a tree growing basically ON the property line? And I grant that what THIS neighbor is OK with, the next one may object to, but if this one gets bent out of shape, then it may not be one of your best ideas to plant a tree there. Does the county have set-backs around fire hydrants? It's hard to judge the distance from the photo, and I may be over-worrying. In general, 6 hours of sun, and you are getting more than that there, is considered to be equivalent to full sun, so I think a crabapple would be fine. Otherwise, a redbud, a dogwood, or any "understory tree" of an appropriate size should do fine.

I just happened to do a search that found your posting. I sounds like you might live near me - Cedar Hill? We have a couple things in common: we put Buffalo grass sod down around a new house here, and it is doing great - even better in light shade than in full sun, contrary to much that I read. I did have some compost tilled into my hard clay soil, but found when I planted that they missed lots of areas. nevertheless, I have a huge perennial garden that is doing well with minimal watering. I have several varieties of cannas in the ground all year - but none variegated. They look great in early summer, but get too dry and stop blooming. They are 6 feet and more. In my previous house I had dwarf cannas that were about the height you want. I just bought 2 Texas star hibiscus plants. I hope they make it - yours sound great! I have one variegated miscanthus or maiden grass that is beautiful - you might like that. But I'm not sure why you want something variegated in front of the hibiscus? Anyway, it's more than a year later - let me know what you did! PS I'm a granny too.

Thanks cannahavana, I just checked out red stripe at GD. Pretty and possibility for other location. Sitting outside yesterday sizing up the TX Hibs .... I think a variegation with some yellow in it will be best. With the sun on the Hibs there is much "yellow" in the overall affect from sunlight. Question: When places list the height as for example 72" is that leaf height or height at which flowers reach? For the area in question with Hibs as backside plants, the Hibs are about 8' tall at tops but flowers start at about 3' and go all the way up (TS Hibs get sparcer as season progresses). I need canna leaves to top out at about 5'-5 1/2' or 6' max for this location. (The Hibs will probably be even taller next year as this is their second summer but don't want to plan around them being taller.) At Plant Delights: Bengal Tiger is listed as 72" - (leaves .. grow to 6' and are topped in summer with bright orange flowers..) Mactro 50" - (foliage makes a sturdy 4-5' tall clump .. topped .. with flower spikes..) Minerva 60" - ('Minerva' makes a 5' tall stalk .. topped off with unique red flower buds) Does this look like the listed height is to be assumed to be the height of leaves (under "normal" growing conditions)? As far as swapping.. I really don't have anything to swap in the near future. In late Oct. I'll be letting some of the Hardy Hibs set seeds and may have some Datura seeds if my new babies have time before winter. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the Brugs, i.e, move to GH for winter or chop down and root cuttings. In Jan I'll do first major prunning on Tropical Hibs but it will take them a while to root. The three Tropicannas (my first cannas ever) I got a couple of weeks ago are putting out bunches of off-shoots really fast but I'm unsure what my plans are for them. Another question: If I ordered a few Cannas from PD now could I grow them all winter in heated GH and expect them to multiply over winter? That surely would be the least expensive way to fill up the beds. Thanks for all the help, geekgranny

poaky, I share your pain. I have waited 20 years for the trees to do their shade trick, and it is working. When I bought this place (1987), it was a pasture without a tree, a corn field with no shade (maize field, if you read this from across the pond), and a set of barns and sheds with a Red Maple, 2 Black Walnuts, a cluster of Black Locust and a dying Cherry. I hate to mow grass. I also don't believe in raking leaves. What to do..... What to do is plant trees whose leaves disappear near the house, and the Oaks, Chestnuts etc. farther away from habitation. Trident Maples, Japanese Maples, Dogwoods and Sourwood all have leaves that melt into the lawn. The shade from the trees really slows the growth of the grass, and most Dandelions have left the area. I'm not fanatic about a lawn. I never fertilize, reluctantly mow, and never treat for weeds. But dandelions do get pulled from time to time. Ever pull one up and see the aphids clustered on the roots? These same aphids will attach to other roots too. Like on desirable plants. If you ever get to York County,PA, passing through to Balt-Wash or stopping nearby, leave a note on this board. I'll give you directions and you can see what it looks like after 25 years. We've planted a few trees every single year, some years more, and after 25 years some parts are starting to resemble a forest. There's still grass to mow, but it grows slower, and the dandelions are more scattered.

Out of desperation and lack of room in January or February I stuck an Arcadia Louisiana Tea in a spot that gets 3 - 3.5 hours of afternoon sun after 1:30 (and total shade before.) It has actually put out a straight cane already - now less than 18" tall - that has 3 buds on it! The plant is very short - 12"? - and maybe 18" wide, basically still a baby, very green, healthy and happy. I'm amazed. I'm sure no knowledgeable person (nor even a dimwit!) would have approved of this site between 2 oak trees with an arbor between it and the sun. I hope he continues to like his spot.

Yes, York, in the ARE catalog, at least, Teas are listed as zone 7 and up. But so are most of the HTs on helpmefind. So I guess I am looking for any of the hardier teas, if there are any.

Hi redsox,

After some research and polling other zone 6 forumers, I chose Lady Hillingdon, just planted a few weeks ago. Olga grows a large specimen in her zone 6b garden. Not sure if you are a/b, but even a lot of dieback, I'm hopeful I can grow it.

What are you planning to do about winter protection?

I think that I am still zone 6a. I am only 1hour 40min from Cincy. Do you live near the city? We get there once in a blue moon.

Hi Red,

I'm not planting a ton of winter protection, especially after the bout with canker I've had this year. My LH is planted in front of a west facing stone wall that I hope will offer some protection. I've got about 3 inches of pine bark mulch around it. I bought own root, so hoping for regrowth even if it dies back to the crown. I would think you'd be even better off.

I live square in the middle of the metro area, actually in a city surrounded by the city of Cincinnati. I'd be glad to show you the garden next time you guys are in town.

Tea roses like a lot of sun. After a year or two, you could end up with a tea that gets fungal and cane diseases, with a slow decline.

I've done a great deal of experimenting, and roses need sun. Sometimes poor health and performance is blamed on a rose, when many times it's just a result of an improper growing situation. The Antique Rose Emporium is truly correct in their directions on planting roses.
