What kind of mulch to use under fir trees...need to enrich soil

I am in the second planting season in my new home. This home was built in 1963 and has several large douglas fir trees on the property. I am trying to clean up the yard and am now at a point where I want to begin planting new plants. I have started to dig in several spots and the soil is dry and seems to lack nutrients. It also seems to be very clay like. I am assuming that since there were no plants (with the exception of rhodies and other shrubs) in the yard when we moved in that it has decades of barkdust decomposing. What can I use as mulch that will help to keep the weeds down, but also enrich the soil?

I would like to eventually plant hostas and other foliage type plants here.
