Polan weedeater trash or treasure?

found me a nice older polan weedeater on the curb. After disassembly and clean up nothing wrong with it other than lack of fuel system maintenance. The fuel filter fell off this in turn allowed fine dirt to be sucked up into the carb. This plugged the carb up and eventually prevented it from starting. New fuel line, DCA (disasseble, cleaning, and assemble) on the carb. new diaphramn and she purr'en again. I like this older model it has homelite engine (I have about 3 spare engines hanging around from the rafters) with adjustable carb. and a straight shaft. Hanging with the rest of my collection of 6 weedeaters and 7 chainsaws.

One of the Poulan Pro 32 or 33cc engine trimmer is not too bad. It is a full crank engine. I looked at the IPL, it is very similiar to Husky design. From what I gather, it is made by Husky. The 25cc is not the same, it is a half crank cheap stuff.

Oh, Rjinga! I'm so sorry. My jaw dropped at the before and after pics, too. Bless your heart. I would definitely do what Fenceline suggested! From Smilies Then let it go. To make it easier to do that, think "Well, now he can't kill me I ever damage something of his." Unless he does this sort of thing often. In that case, maybe marriage counseling? My ex used to do things like this. One of the worst ~ Years ago, after being tired of tripping on hoses laying all over the garden, I spent all day one day digging trenches and laying pvc pipe water lines to every raised bed in my 40'x50' veggie plot. Just when I was about half an hour from finishing it and turning on the water, he came out to "help", bringing his bobcat tractor into the garden to "build me a new bed". Yeah, you can see where this is going... This wasn't the only time he'd done something like this, hence why he's my ex. Sometimes I wonder if marriage counseling would have helped. I kind of doubt it since there were more problems than this (actually this sort of thing was a symptom of his much bigger problems). Good luck to you. I sincerely hope this is an isolated incident (or one of only a very small few over the years), that he didn't do it out of any sort of passive aggressiveness or malice, and is just finding it hard to understand that it really is that big of a deal to you. (I'd bet that now, even if he doesn't understand why it is, he knows it is. ;)

calamity, I have never mosaiced anything (just common grouting). When I see you mosaic artists I am MORE THAN IMPRESSED!!!! I just hope someday I will get enough courage to learn that art form. That fountain could be a true work of art if I just had 1 teaspoon of your talent! I believe the time must come when I try doing a step stone. I recently got all of the left overs from a lady who made step stones. Mold, concrete dyes in multiple colors, concrete conditioner, colored grouts etc. etc. No tiles though. (FREECYCLE!!!!) So I have been collecting slowly to begin such an endeavor. But instead of creating art KIRK has me writing Country Songs on the Conversation Side!!!! Ha Ha Ya got'a love this Forum. My two Old Poulan/Craftsman started and ran as I expected. With my arms vs My Son-In-Law’s (w/o going to ER Yet) LOL! The .MPG files of the saws running w/n attach. 1. I ran both 5-10 Min with fresh Stabil treated fuel. Normally, I “would have” left some of the treated fuel in the saws for a year as in the past. The old fuel looked so bad that I felt it might be better to Run Them Bone Dry. *** Opinions! Bad IMO from evaporating (if fuel will) since it looked more like oil than fuel. 2. ** I saw a Craftsman attachment related to Electric Starting past pull start Engines. I’ll have to go back to see if it was related to Old Equipment or will adapt. I feel it was and I’ll try to attach it to get some opinions X Safety and Realistic. I feel it was to prevent Kickbacks. If I would try one, it would be w/o the bar and chain to prime up a saw that had been sitting a year as these. Plus, I have a complete retired engine as the green one + spare parts. Have you figured out why the area in question is getting hot enough to melt? Exhaust leak? Muffler plugged? Residual heat that gets trapped where it shouldn't? Lack of proper air circulation around the engine? Is the engine tuned properly in the first place (too lean = too hot)? In any case, the answer isn't going to be an "oversized" muffler, seeing as there is no such thing out there. Possible answers would include modifying the muffler to decrease backpressure (and retuning carb in response to the modified muffler, etc...), but this should be viewed as an improvement and shouldn't be viewed as a solution - your problem shouldn't be happening in the first place. So you need to figure out what's going on. In any case, it might be worth having someone knowledgeable look at the saw, recognizing that whatever you saved on this saw will soon be spent getting it running *right* again. It is also a good lesson about why modern Poulan/Homelite/Craftsman/TroyBilt/McCulloch/etc. saws should be avoided - they are per se garbage and it is only through sheer luck that a decent one comes through their factory every once in a while. Had you spent your money on a good machine of reputable manufacture, you likely would not be having these problems.

My newest weedeater is an old Garden Way straight shaft trimmer with bycycle handle bar. Weighs a ton,works great, has a Tecumseh engine. All my trimmers (6) are old. Most being Homelite.

well, really you can part these things out and keep some of the running for ever. Good example is the homelite I found with a bad connecting rod bearing which let the piston hit the spark plug when you rev'ed it up. Had that little knocking sound. Course all I did was remove the jug,piston and connecting rod assembly from my parts bin, and installed the jug, piston and connecting rod assemble and it ran like new, took all of 30 mins even as slow as I am!

Homelite gets a bad rap most of the time not that familiar with the newer models, but for me they are easy to work on and light. Course this polan has all the plastic molding hiding the engine, so it's alittle heavier.

Even if the polan didn't work out think of all the spare parts????? coil, carb. straight shaft, throttle cable assemble, screws, and on and on.

I know for non-mechanical types this would be trash and they would just walk on by. But, for use that rarely buy new and can keep most everybody trash running for a couple of decades longer we see the value in the parts department!

I am going to breakdown and buy me a new mini tiller this spring, finely worn out my little wonder. Hopefully the new models will last half as long as the first generation? if so it will outlast me!

I dont buy OPE anymore. I dumpster dive for it. This summer, I found a Toro and a LB SP mower that needed only a few bolts to be put into shape. Both start on the 1st pull and drive fine.
